How to Save Money at ABC Veterinary Hospital San Diego Uptown

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I just recently took my pup Monkey in for an ear infection. Dr Romero was amazing and I trusted that Monkey was in good hands. They cleaned his ear and administered medication and he’s doing much better. Dr Romero gave me guidance about transitioning Monkeys food and spent time with me and answered all my helicopter parent questions. The entire staff is always very friendly and helpful. The receptionists are super sweet to Monkey and you can tell they genuinely care about your fur baby. Thank you to everyone we will see you in a week to have Monkeys check up.

I've been bringing my pups to Dr. Romero on and off for 10 years, following him as best I could throughout San Diego. You can imagine how happy I was when I found he opened his own practice! I don't have to follow him for vet care anymore. Me and my pups call ABC Uptown "home". That's how much I think about how good of a vet he is... he's the only one I trust... and my pups (Thor-10yrs running wild and free in heaven since 2021, Sheera-8yrs, and Bryer-20mo) love him too! My pups have also been treated by Dr. LeBrecque, Hannah, Ari, Ady, and Jasmine (sorry if I left anyone off) and we can't forget Lindsey who's always so pleasant and has handled many of my appointments and records requests. I am grateful for the care they provide my pups every visit! And can't forget to mention, the facility is clean! If you are looking for a really good vet, make an appointment with Dr. Romero and see for yourself!

Your professionalism and expertise are unmatched, and I appreciate how patient and compassionate you are with both the furry patients and their worried owners like me. The guidance you offer has been invaluable in ensuring my dog's health and well-being. I am grateful for the extra mile you go by checking on his progress when he's not feeling well. Your genuine concern and follow-up calls provide a sense of reassurance during challenging times.

My dog is a “frequent flyer” at the vet, due to health concerns and anal glands that need to be expressed regularly. The staff at ABC Vet Uptown have been incredible during every up and down for the past 3 years. The receptionists are friendly and helpful. The vet techs are great at working with my dog’s anxious temperament and helping her feel as calm as possible. And you can tell that Dr. Romero truly cares about the animals he sees. I would recommend any of my friends/family and strangers to this vet office. Your pet’s health will be in good hands!

Been coming here with my Dog Casey for years and also now bring my two cats. The office staff is great and very helpful. The doctor is equally as kind and understanding and seems to actually care about his patients and spends a fair amount of time with us at every visit. I highly recommend their services. They may not be the cheapest but who wants bottom of the barrel for their pets, though their visit fee is lower then many others but I would be anxious if something big happened which is why I pay for insurance.
