Expensive Mystery Ailment Paid For

Our normally social and affectionate 6 year old Poodle was behaving beyond strangely. Hiding, trembling, squealing at the touch. After 2 days we were extremely concerned that there was some undetectable injury, bite, or infection that could have serious health implications. We took her to an emergent veterinary hospital where a physical exam showed no trauma or obvious signs of infection. Tests run by her regular doctor also revealed a dog in perfect health. After a few days, she returned to normal and we all concluded that the episode was a post traumatic, emotional reaction to something that happened to her which we didn't see, but which nonetheless affected her deeply. By the end of the week we had our dog back and several hundred dollars in medical bills, which Pets Best reimbursed. Our story couldn't have ended better and is proof positive that insurance is well worth the investment. Thanks to you all.

Fancy has been having a sick spell for a few months. Trupanion has been a blessing with assisting with testing and medication. We could not have done it without Trupanion. I don't know what we would have done otherwise.

Here is the comment I left the company after they inquired about Teddy's recovery from his surgery:

Thanks so much for your interest in Teddy!! Teddy is doing very well after needing a miracle surgery to save him! We though it was going to be a routine visit for some constipation and other "rear end issues" but my wife called me hysterical saying he has Bloat and that an emergency surgery was needed and that it wasn't looking very good. Thankfully, our vet Dr. was able to perform a successful surgery and although he was in pretty bad shape the first few days he has shown great improvement and looks to be passed all his problems!!

I want to thank your company for the quick and very adequate reimbursement for Teddy's medical costs! It has been a Godsend. I will totally recommend your company to any pet owner I know!!

Thanks so much for everything and stay well!!!

Sincerely,

Michael Schweller

Great Insurance!

Our puppy, Daenerys, is our Shepherd, Malinois furry baby. She was adopted from a shelter at three months. I immediately did a lot of research on insurance providers for pets. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance was rated very highly plus they had no maximum limits on claim payouts and provided reimbursed on 90% of an emergency medical cost. These are the reasons to purchase insurance; to cover the cost in case of emergencies.

One day while out, Daenerys drank from an anti-freeze puddle in a parking lot. After talking to the vet hospital, we immediately decided to take her in for treatment. Even small amounts of anti-freeze can kill most pets, but by the time you see symptoms it is usually to late. The hospital did find anti-freeze toxins in her blood, and she underwent dialysis for five hours to save her life.

After the procedure I filed a claim with Healthy Paws. I was worried that they might reject the claim for some reason and would have to fight to get the payment. We had only paid nine months of premiums at this point and the bill for the hospital was over $5,000, so they were losing money on this payout. But Healthy Paws came through for us. Not only did they get the claim and money over to us within about 48 hours after they received the paperwork, but they also wrote to check on how Daenerys was doing after reading the medical report.

Thanks, Healthy Paws! We really appreciate all your support!

Disingenuous Deductible

I have the $250 deductible 80% coverage plan but it is disingenuous to call this a $250 deductible. It is a $300 deductible because only 80% of eligible costs go towards the deductible.

In my insurance policy it says: "DEDUCTIBLE: Your pet’s deductible is shown on the pet schedule of the declarations page. Your pet’s
deductible shall apply once per coverage term. "

My declarations page says: Coinsurance
(Your Share):
20%
Reimbursement
(Our Share):
80%
Annual Deductible:
$250

Example, if I have a $1,000 vet bill that are all eligible costs I would expect to pay $400 (assuming its the first claim of the year). This is made up of a $250 deductible and $150 (($1,000-$250)*.20=$150) and Healthy Paws would reimburse me $600. ((($1,000-$250)*.80=$600)

HOWEVER, Healthy Paws looks at the $1000 bill and ($1,000*80%= $800) because "I am responsible for 20% of all vet bills and healthy paws reimburses 80% of total vet bills". They they take the $250 deductible out of the $800 and I am only reimbursed $550 and not $600. This is truly a $300 deductible.

I was told by a customer service liaison (who was incredibly insulting) that deductibles in pet insurance work differently than deductibles such as in homeowners, car, or health insurance policies.

I pay a good amount of money per month for my policy, I've held it for almost 4 years now. I would expect more from this company.

Very difficult to file a claim. Said needed more information from my vet and that they would call. Said they could not contact my vet and closed the claim. I have no idea what additional information they needed but they just went ahead and closed the claim.

Unrealistic claims policy

I submitted a claim for an ear infection on an 18-month-old Goldendoodle. It was denied because he had an ear infection before that was treated and was corrected. He got another ear infection unrelated to the first and I was told the denial was because of a previous instance. I was told that we would not get a claim for an ear infection approved for the rest of his life. Dogs with floppy ears periodically get ear infections and Pets Best knew what kind of dog he was when we signed up. If I had wanted catastrophic coverage only, I would have expected the price to be substantially lower than it is. It appears that unless you sign up your dog at birth, little except catastrophic events would be covered. What a waste of time and money. I cancelled the policy.
