How to Save Money at Cabrillo Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Blaisy,my 7yr old golden retriever, was spayed & had a repair of a small umbilical hernia on 12/11/25. Pre & postop recovery care was excellent! Communication with Dr. Lefkowitz & staff was great! Very kind compassionate team.💕🙏

Changed my opinion in minutes—catastrophe and desperation to going above and beyond in minutes. I will absolutely make them our family, if they make us/my lab a part of theirs. I have just moved back to San Diego, and I hadn’t had time to plan. I had my own health crisis and my lab is my service dog. He has a LONG, complex extremely traumatizing history, and I have spent everyday hoping he can live a full life. He is my family, my lifeline. I admit to sending the records late but summarized what I could across 8 states, 20+ vets, ERs, urgent cares with my medical issues (shared cytology) tied in. Today was meant to be an intro, but Jagger, my happy incredible loving Velcro dog had started rapidly declining and he needed care. He was inflamed and in pain. I had sent a detailed but concise timeline and history, with a large and redundant some irrelevant google drive folder. It was sent less than 20 mins before the appointment. That is on me. I always use a disclaimer—do not turn away my dog—he has specialists but he needs a family vet. His history is complex but 90% of the time he is happy wiggly and active. This turned urgent this AM, and I felt lucky to have an appointment. I was told they needed time to review records, and that they couldn’t see him. I went full Karen and said I would report them to the ADA—I was 7 minutes late and they could do an exam, regardless of history. They ended up seeing him and doing an ultrasound, assessing his pain, and were gentle, knowledgeable and the vet was amazing with Jagger. What I thought was dismissive was actually a desire to dig deeper with probably some fear around his history. He was meant to be healthy this visit and he wasn’t. I told them what records to focus on and left with treatment and some hope. I definitely could see that they cared, and wanted to further investigate. They handled my stress with grace, and did everything they could. I was scared and desperate. They did the best they could with why they had and it was better than good. I can confidently say I will make them family if they truly do go through his records and make him their family. The importance of keeping an unhealthy service lab healthy is incredibly hard and frightening—they changed my opinion fast. Thank you

Took my pet in same day. I may have gotten lucky. Staff is kind, place is very clean, and there is parking lot. My pet seems to be doing very well after an emergency yesterday. They held up their end of everything. It was a good experience starting with the first call. It seemed like a lot of money but it’s not more than other vets in the area, and the service was better. My cat is going to be okay and that’s what matters to my family. The vet was just as nice as the staff and I felt like I trusted her right away. Would totally return with more pets.

The staff is very friendly & gets to know your pet. They make sure my dog eats (which is a challenge when she is boarded as she gets very nervous when boarded) by offering her different food (rather than her regular food) if needed. They offer activities such as Kong time, playtime (one-on-one with a super calm resident dog or group playtime with other boarded dogs), and she got her annual wellness check & vaccinations while there, saving me a separate vet appt. They also offer grooming services! It is comforting to know they are connected to the vet hospital upstairs in case there is an emergency, I know she will get any medical attention needed. All of this gives me peace of mind when I am out of town as I know my dog is being well taken care of.
