How to Save Money at Animal Acupuncture and Rehabilitation Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog, Meatball, has been a patient of Dr. Sosna since July of 2025. His treatment there has been beyond outstanding, as I’ve seen significant improvement in just a couple of weeks. Dr. Sosna clearly cares about my dog’s health as much as I do. The programs my dog experiences are tailored for him and his needs versus a broad generalization that could apply to any breed or any age. What I also like is that my opinion about my dog’s treatment there is also heard and valued. Dr. Sosna is patient, kind, knowledgeable, and communicates to me using “living room” language, so I can understand the intricacies of my dog’s health. What is also great is that she is not just a physical therapist, but she’s also a veterinarian. Her knowledge goes well beyond physical therapy, as she willingly shares her expertise when I question what I see going with Meatball’s health regarding other treatments or medications. I thoroughly enjoy taking my dog to see Dr. Sosna, and he really likes being there, too. I cannot highly recommend her highly enough.

We LOVE Dr. Claire Sosna and her entire staff! Animal Acupuncture and Rehabilitation Center (AARC) was recommended to us because our 8-year old Pembroke Welsh Corgi - Cali the California Girl (AKC Champion Show Dog - Ret) has a genetic predisposition to Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). While Cali has not shown any signs of actually having DM we took her in for an assessment as a preemptive move to make sure we had not overlooked or missed anything PLUS we were looking for ideas in nutritional supplements, treatments, exercises and the like. Given Cali's age, we thought this was necessary and appropriate so our pet can live its best life. Our timing was perfect. Prior to our appointment, Cali had shown signs of muscle strain after playing extra hard during her daily outdoor routine here at home. While Cali was cleared of DM, she definitely needed to have some treatments and new exercises. Cali had a series of Laser Treatments and Underwater treadmill therapy, plus obstacle course training to help promote healing, strength and wellbeing. In addition, Dr. Sosna recommended a series of nutritional supplements (which we integrated into her daily feeding schedule). Cali responded favorably to the treatments and supplements. Also the inclusion of new home exercises (that include our own obstacle course) into her daily playtime has greatly enriched her life. The AARC support staff is incredibly supportive, empathetic and loving to our precious pets. Cali looked forward to her AARC visits as the Laser Treatments, Water Therapy and Obstacle Course routine became her weekly personal health spa. Dr. Sosna is friendly, helpful, accessible and insightful when it comes to caring for our pets. I especially like her homeopathic, holistic approach as it provides a complementary fit to the outstanding care Cali receives from her regular vet as well as the neurologist who periodically evaluates our pet for DM. In fact, it was the neurologist who directed us to AARC! We are proud to give AARC our highest recommendation.

We are all here because we are desperate to find help for our pets. Medical science has so many variables, and every diagnosis is specific to the pet and his/her condition. So it’s difficult dealing with practitioners who are so entrenched in their own method of treatment that they fabricate a diagnosis in order to sell a treatment plan that they offer….especially when you’re paying $330 for just a consultation. I took my dog in for his leg (it’s a whole story but he’s had knee surgery that was successful and it’s healed- but he’s recently stopped using his leg at all). I was told that the consultation would be 2 hours, and she showed up almost 30 minutes late and then told me that timing is her biggest challenge. I am a scheduled person and I did not have time to stay 30 mins after the previously scheduled 2 hour window. She didn’t offer a discount for the missed time. A good hour of the exam was her talking about which supplements I should be giving my dog. It took this long because she did not have pamphlets or names of supplements previously written down- she would talk about a supplement, then google search it on her phone, then scroll around to find it and check the ingredients, then copy and send the link in a text to me. She didn’t sell them herself so it wasn’t like she was trying to promote the supplements- she actually seemed like she really knew what she was talking about- but it was painful how long it took her to dig up each individual one and then send it to me. Insisted on this method as opposed to just writing down the name for me. Not sure why. The exam was not too much more than a normal vet exam. Actually she even checked his teeth and then went on another supplement tangent about which tooth supplements I should be giving him (he’s old, he’s had some teeth out, and I brush and give dental chews but there’s only so much you can do). And anyway, I’m there to figure out how I can get him to use his leg. So not sure why we went to the teeth. Again, she’s already 30 mins late and now we have a total of maybe 30 minutes left in time to discuss his leg. She did a brief gait assessment and told me she saw him toe touching. He doesn’t, it’s just he keeps his leg tucked up and sometimes his toes tap the floor when he hops. She then also did a pain assessment and told me he is in deep pain and prescribed prednisone. Well, there has been no change and he’s been on it for a week. And, in fact, I took him in to my primary vet (what I should have done first), and she confirmed he has no deep pain because he has basically no feeling in that limb. So, all in all, unless you’re sure for a fact that your animal needs acupuncture and water therapy- and have been told this by one or more vets not including this vet- please do not waste your money here. This business would do so much better not charging such a wild amount for essentially a supplement rundown and a hypothesis about what could potentially help your pet.

Love AARC! Staff were always so friendly to my dog, Mosley, and myself. Before Mosley passed away, they did so much to help him, and Dr. Sosna was the best! Recommend to anyone

Unfortunately I agree with all of the scam comments.I scheduled a 2 hour “consult,” she started 30 minutes late and finished the whole consult within 45 minutes. She offered to let my dog start on the water treadmill, which I agreed to since there was so much extra time leftover. But didn’t mention anything further than that, and when I went up to pay she increased the consultation price from 300 and add on an additional 170 for the water treadmill without discussing with me. I would not recommend. For that cost, no handouts or exercises even recommended either. She also has quite poor professional behavior, no apologies for being late or poor communication and awkward. My dog is doing great post surgery still without it!
