How to Save Money at Veterinary Urgent Care - Rancho Peñasquitos

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Had to bring our kitty Kiran here late on a Monday night. He decided it would be fun to chase after his sister Killian and she decided she had had enough and smacked him in the eye. Kiran's eye was bleeding pretty bad and I had remembered seeing the urgent care on the way home from work. The staff is very friendly and helpful and very caring. I filled out paperwork and was taken back to the examination room. Within a few minutes we were seen. The Staff accessed Kiran and gave us some options on the best way to handle the poor lil guys eye. Thank goodness everything appears to be alright. It is completely different from going to our doctor and we do not have pet insurance but I found the costs to be fairly reasonable and appreciate all their help to ensure Kiran is ok.

I brought my pup in for an allergic reaction from an insect bite and so glad I brought my pup here. The clinic was really clean and welcoming. I brought my pup in and they took her back almost immediately. The doctor on staff was empathetic and explained the whole process thoroughly. The vet tech Michelle was really helpful and nice. I highly recommend taking your pet here for any urgent needs !

Yesterday my elderly blind cat had blood in her eye. After calling my regular vet who had no openings and didn't offer urgent care on the weekend, I called this place. Even though they didn't have any openings they offered to see if they could fit her in between appointments. I only sat in the waiting room for about 15 minutes before they brought us back. The staff and Dr. Schneider were wonderful. They spent a lot of time with us trying to figure out what was going on and what I could do to help my cat. They were so caring, gentle and helpful. I would definitely bring one of my pets back here for urgent care.

So thankful for Veterinary Urgent Care. About a week after adopting a kitten from the Humane Society he developed a deep, pronounced cough. We called our regular Vet and was told it was over a week before an appointment was available. We called numerous local veterinary hospitals and no one would see our tiny kitten in a timely manner. Then we called Urgent Care and made an appointment right away. They were kind and caring from the moment we talked and through the entire experience. Poor little guy had an upper respiratory infection and needed antibiotics. The staff was so attentive and compassionate. You could tell they loved animals. The little guy is totally fine now, thankfully he received timely care. I so appreciate that Urgent Care has filled an obvious need in the San Diego animal community. Thank you for caring for us and our tiny kitten. So appreciate you!

Brought my kitty here because she wasn’t feeling well and needed a same day appointment. Got in easily and the vet was very thorough in explaining everything. Gave her the treatments she needed. Prices are fair. Will return if need another urgent visit.
