How to Save Money at VCA Animal Specialty Group
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have taken too long to write this. Dr. Melanie Benz is absolutely incredible. She will take the time to answer any questions you might have, she is honest, caring and always available. I hope you never have to see her, but if you have a pet with cancer, she is the best in my book. Our Reeve is still doing amazing after completing her chemo early last year. I know the cancer will probably come back and take her at some point, but for now we are enjoying every minute with our beautiful Reeve

My 13 year old cat, Elton rapidly became sick and I took him in late night once I figured it out (with cats I find it very hard to tell if something is serious or they're just being weird). I'd used ASG in the past for my cat; I found them to have friendly staff. 24 hour service was key, transparent with prices. The vet discussed and helped me work through treatment options, listening to and accounted for my philosophy about not wanting aggressive treatments and didn't push them. On the downside, the wait time post admission was a lot longer than they said; e.g. a ½ hr wait turned into almost 1.5 hours; with no interim updates. Better would be to give a range of time. As with all US medical care (pets and people), I found it a bit mercenary from a financial perspective, but it's a business. Elton ultimately died there.

This clinic saved our dogs life within a 4 hour visit. We took our dog to another 24hr facility and they almost killed him. Brought here and w a simple plan of action and not leaving him crated up for days w that cost, he was back to normal within a week or so. His platlet count went to nothing so he was bleeding out. We spent 5k at other hospital w no diagnosis and they presented us w a blood transfusion diag that would have been astronomical. Literally cost $200 for the vet to fix him here at this clinic. Biggy is fine and a healthy boy living out his best life. Ty for everything VCA.

VCA Kearny Mesa provided such amazing care for our dog Manny at the end of his life. He received care multiple times from both the Internal Medicine team and the Emergency team during the last year and I cannot say enough good things about our experiences. Every veterinarian, vet tech, and front desk staff member we encountered was professional and compassionate. Unfortunately we had to make the difficult decision to let him go this past weekend and the Emergency care team helped him cross the Rainbow Bridge in the most peaceful way.

I have nothing but good things to say about the VCA animal specialty group. Unfortunately, on 18 November I had to bring my kitty in named charger. He was 18 years old and he was very sick and he ended up passing away, but they were extremely compassionate. They were very honest with me And they were very gentle and loving towards my cat. They wrapped him in a warm blanket and make sure that his last goodbye was not chaotic at all I just wanted to say thank you so much and I appreciate all the care that you did give him in a short amount of time and I really love the paw print and the cremation process that was given to me . I did not remember the doctor that was on call for that night around 8:30 PM, but she was amazing and very sympathetic .
