How to Save Money at Animal Outpatient Surgery of San Diego and Blue Sky Veterinary Services, Inc.
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

All of the staff at this facility are very pet oriented. It was difficult accepting that our pet needed TLPO knee surgery. Dr. Farrell explained the surgery in terms that we would totally understand what he would do to repair her knee. Very impressed with all layers of the staff there. We just got her clearance from her surgery. Very close to being like new again. I highly recommend this facility for surgeries your pet may require. Dr. Farrell and all of his staff are very compassionate and caring and competent to help your little fur balls get better.

We brought our dog Quinn in for TPLO surgery following a CCL tear. I had decided this was our surgery team based on the first call with Tori and Tina. I am quite the anxious dog owner and they responded to me with such care and detail. Then with meeting the surgery team they walked through every detail before and after surgery. The way they got down and sat on the floor with Quinn while they spoke with me. The affection they showed him made me know he was in good hands. We are now finishing up recovery. Quinn is back to 2 mile walks a day (8 weeks post op) and just received his all clear to resume normal activity. I cannot thank this amazing staff enough. Thank you for giving our pup his quality of life back!

We’ve had two TPLO surgeries done now with our golden retriever and everything went well. Maybe a little difference in The surgeons protocol and I liked one better than the other. Both were very professional, and Tori is great too. My Golden is very active and we’re looking forward to her returning to being a retriever chasing that ball.

Cookie is on her way to recovery! I adopted Cookie a few months ago and to start she already needed surgery to remove a mammary gland tumor. I did that with my primary vet. However, when she recovered from this I noticed her knees did not look right. I was super stressed out about having to put her through another surgery so shortly after. Plus the cost of two surgeries so shortly doesn’t help! I spoke to a couple of different vets and felt that this hospital was the most genuine. They don’t overcharge or oversell unlike most vet hospitals these days. They are definitely reasonable. And most importantly they know what they are doing! At 8 years old, I was very worried about doing the bilateral patella surgery but she is healing so well. That is the surgeon’s skill. Also, shout out to Tina and staff for dealing with my ridiculous insurance company and their lack of competence. They were also very patient with my questions and my anxiety after her surgery when she had a weird reaction to the pain meds. She’s recovering very well! Three weeks post op and she’s starting to go on walks of about 1/3rd mile. Thanks Dr. Farrell! Excited to see her progress.

Dr. Farrell spent a lot of time with us going through the procedure step by step and answering all of our questions thoroughly. The office staff is very easy to contact via text with questions during the recovery phase and very supportive. If our dog tears his other CCL (which is bound to happen), we will be right back at this same office for the next surgery!
