How to Save Money at Bodhi Animal Hospital, A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I never write reviews, and especially stay from bad reviews, but this must be done. I have gone to Bodhi animal hospital for about 6 years now. In fact, how I found them was when I first moved to SD and needed a job. I worked briefly there as a receptionist. It was one of the worst jobs I have had with coworkers who were entitled, I received no help or training, and it wasn't the best work environment nor welcoming. I had a dog who I loved dearly and continued to go to Bodhi after my experience because he was established there, and I didn't want the hassle of finding a new vet. I often left upset, didn't understand what they were charging for and are not the best communicators. Forwarding to this year, my dog was very sick, weak, wouldn't eat, panting and bloated stomach. When I took my dog to Bodhi, they immediately diagnosed him by feeling his stomach and back area and diagnosed him with a slipped disk. Bodhi told me 2 weeks resting with 0 activity and muscle relaxers for his slipped disk. After two weeks, he was even worse than when I first brought him in. When I called Bodhi, I expressed my concerns and the urgency that he needed to be seen again because I believe he was misdiagnosed. They told me there was no openings and to go to another vet which they provided me numbers, I called the vets they recommended, and they were all closed. You would think if Bodhi doesnt have openings, they would keep their customers up to date on who can possibly see their pet and their hours of operations. I had to do research and I finally found another vet, All Day Pet Animal Hospital, where they took the time to listen to me and all the symptoms my dog had. I was right, Bodhi animal hospital did misdiagnose my dog, what he really had was a Tumor in his spleen and it was weeks away from exploding. Bodhi animal hospital never called back to check on my dog and I have yet to tell them he was misdiagnosed and has now passed. If Bodhi would have taken the time on our original appointment, things would have been different. Plus, how Bodhi reacted to my call after telling them that my dog was worse than before and telling me to go somewhere else then giving me phone numbers to all closed vets when I needed my dog to be seen that day. I am so upset with them; I will tell anyone and everyone who will listen NEVER TO GO THERE. Horrible customer service, lack of empathy and overall do not care about owners or their pets. I cannot say enough bad things about this place.

We love Bodhi! We’ve brought our senior cat a few times since moving here, and he’s always been well taken care of and the staff have been lovely. But this week we took in a stray kitten that the vets believe had been hit by a car and had suffered major internal injury. The entire staff, and Dr. Morgan in particular, were so incredible with her, and so supportive of us. An emergency surgery for a cat we didn’t even know 24 hours earlier was definitely not something we had planned to be paying for, and Dr. Morgan personally called hospitals and surgeons until she found someone who could do the emergency surgery for an amount and in a way we could afford. The surgeon they brought in was also fantastic (I don’t remember his name!). They were all so communicative, truly had Jenny’s best interest at heart, and also really worked with us to make sure we could do what was best for her while keeping the unexpected cost as low as possible. Jenny is doing great and seems to have a good life ahead of her. Our deepest thanks to Dr. Morgan, the surgeon, and the entire Bodhi team.

Every single person who works at Bodhi is caring, kind, and great at their jobs. They helped me get my cat a life saving surgery and have checked in with me on his progress every day. Thanks to everyone at Bodhi, but especially Dr. B, Ernest is on his way to healing, and we will absolutely be coming back for his annual checkups. I can’t recommend this vet enough!

I am so thankful for the amazing staff at Bodhi. During both appointments I have had here with my dog Apollo, I was scheduled promptly for urgent matters and have been treated so kindly by all of the employees. The staff takes the time to thoroughly review care options and have been extremely patient with my reactive dog. Thank you all so much, you are very appreciated!

They can be a top notch service provider when they choose to. but when they decide to unnecessarily be beholden to policy it really ruins the experience. I came in with an urgent need for help, and knew exactly the issue with my dog, because he had been treated for it exactly 1month earlier. i walked in right at opening and was willing to wait, so that my dog could be “seen” and a prescription could be written for anti diarrhea and anti nausea medication. however they said this could only be done by appointment and that i could not be helped. Even though we all know what the issue is, as listed in his medical records. Thankfully B Street Vet came to the rescue.
