How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The Pacific Beach Banfield is by far the best location I have ever gone to! I have lived in many areas and worked with many Banfields and I have never felt such care for my dogs as I do in Pacific Beach. They are always willing to fit us in at a moments notice and show genuine care and concern. Everyone who works there is friendly and compassionate. All 3 of my pups love going because they are treated so well!

As a veterinary assistant extern at this hospital, I had a wonderful experience. The staff members and doctors at this location were welcoming and knowledgeable. I was impressed by the hard working team, striving tirelessly to provide the upmost level of quality care to each and every animal. The genuine level of love and kindness that was put into caring for each pet was heart warming. Thank you so much for this great opportunity. I will be highly recommending Banfield Pacific Beach to all my friends and family!

unfortunately, the other reviewers are right. This place doesn’t care about pet care, it only wants to charge pet owners. First my appointment was canceled, no one called me to reschedule. By the time I rescheduled, too much time had past for the booster vaccine, no one of course explained this to me. Why would they? Because conveniently for them, they wanted me to pay for 3 visits, around $360. We only needed and asked for the vaccine when the vaccine which is $25. When I questioned their bill, they kept me in a room for almost an hour, threatened me w bill collection and treated me as like I’d run away without paying. Wasted an hour because they don’t administer vaccines only, they net the vet to run their hand through your pet’s belly and then charge you $120 for it. Would never recommend this place for pet owners.

I am extremely disappointed with this location. I have gone to multiple locations and all have been amazing and kind. However, the rudeness and lack of professionalism was absolutely mind blowing. Jenn, the clinic manager was so disrespectful to my 2 pups and I. We will not be returning please do not take your pups here!!!

I started going to the PB location during COVID due to scheduling at my normal branch being an issue. I ended up being so happy with the service (approximately 18 months ago), I started going to them full time. However, this year the staff has fully turned over and overall the new staff are really disappointing. Today, however, was the nail in the coffin for me and this branch. I brought in my dogs and the woman who checked us in very snarkily said that we had to go over the treatment plan since I live so far and don't want any mistakes like last time (last time referring to them making a scheduling and intake error, me driving an hour home, just to be called and told to come back which resulted in a pedicure being comped by a very nice manager). The attitude was just unreal. Then, when speaking to the doctor we found another error this woman made and her superiors were again nice enough to comp me without me even asking, which is awesome. However, she wasn't even the one checking me out and managed to make multiple snarky comments and eye rolls for my stuff being comped. It was just unreal. She worked on 5/24 and was wearing a purple 80's looking windbreaker. Like i legitimately just don't want to interact with energy like that again so I'll be going to a different branch going forward. Real bummer to see the decline of this place.
