How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Never have I felt my pet was more taken care of than I have here! My dog gets SO excited to see his friends at Vetco, and I truly feel they know their stuff. The staff is professional, knowledgeable, and family oriented. Highly recommend.

Brought my dog in because she was peeing blood, but otherwise fine. When taking samples from her as soon as they saw the urine they started with the serious "This is not good" talk. Without seeing any test results the doctor made me feel as though my dog was really sick and I needed to take immediate action. My bill went from under 200 dollars to over 700 with all the testing they wanted to do. There was no way I could afford all that and I didn't want my dog to suffer, so I asked about euthanasia. They were happy to give me a quote on how much it would cost. As we continued to talk they made me feel more and more like that was the best option. And I almost left without my dog. But I decided to think about it some more and left with an antibiotic instead. Turns out she had a UTI. They we willing to murder my otherwise healthy dog for an extra buck. They even called the next day to try the sales pitch again. Don't go to Vetco. Don't shop at Petco. They don't care about you, or your pet. They only want your money.

I took my cat in because he had been limping and this was the first vet that could see him. The vet was friendly but the rest of the office staff didn’t seem to know what they were doing. The vet tech seemed relatively new so I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. My issue started when I drove home after the appointment (45 minutes away) and was going to give my cat his medication. I open the packaging and there was NO MEDICATION inside. The vet tech gave me an EMPTY medication packet. This is ridiculous to me as the medications were the sole reason I brought my cat in in the first place. I called them back and they informed me that the vet tech did give me an empty packet and I would have to drive 45 minutes back to pick it up. I asked if I could just get a refund for it and buy it online to be shipped overnight. They said they can’t issue refunds over the phone and I would have to drive back anyways. I offered many alternatives to pick up the medication as I work 7am-7pm so it’s hard for me to find time to stop by, all to which they said would not be possible. They receptions was rude and not understanding the entire time. I’ve been trying to reach the office to try and coordinate something but each time I call I get the answering service telling me they cannot transfer me to the office and I will have to wait for a call back. This is a lot of hoops to jump through for a mistake that could’ve been prevented in the first place if the tech took the time to check the medication. Not happy at all with the service they provided

The people are wonderful, very caring. Now it's time for his grooming there also. One stop shopping, who doesn't love that

I really liked the staff and the cleanliness, and I especially appreciated that they are upfront with their pricing and don’t pressure you. My only issue is that the tech took my dog into the back to give him his shots and for the vet to check him out. I have no way of knowing how they treated my dog, or if they gave him anything I was charged for, or if the vet herself even looked at him. Obviously they deserve the benefit of the doubt, but I think it’s super unusual and have never seen that anywhere else.
