How to Save Money at Animal Hospital at Baldwin Park

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot speak highly enough of this place. The entire team here truly cultivates a welcoming experience unlike any other place I have received care for my pet. My dog needed urgent care over the holidays and they got us in right away when our regular vet turned us away. We have made this our primary vet since then. Dr. Bowen is the most nurturing and thorough veterinarian I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. My dog Maggie can get very nervous at the vet but Dr. Bowen has such a soothing presence that it always puts my sweet girl at ease. Even this past visit Maggie rolled over to show her belly to Dr. Bowen when she entered the room. They have called to follow up on how their treatment plan is working and make sure that Maggie is recovering as expected. We’re so grateful for this awesome team!

Never before have I encountered such an overpriced vet office. I was quoted between $900-$1900 for dental work for my cat, and this was after I spent several hundred dollars on pre-op work. The three times I was there I had to mentally prepare each time they gave me a bill. I asked around and got a second opinion, and I just spent $500 at another vet for the dental work. I’m alarmed at the price difference and extremely disappointed with this vet’s office. I will not be returning. You all should be ashamed of yourselves!

Lucy has extreme anxiety and has never responded as well to a vet as she does Dr. Bowan. She’s a kind soul and my dogs can tell. More than worth the 30 min drive with two drooly and anxious pups.

August 1, had an appointment for my little Liska, an American Cocker Spaniel from Ukraine, and couldn't be more pleased. BTW, my other cocker is from Sweden. Both were adopted, Sophie when she was 6, Liska 3. Both are Emotional Support Animals. It was an emotional appointment. I had went to Banfield for a Comprehensive exam with the results of mass and possibleTCC in her bladder. They referred me to a specialist Blue Pearl and I didn't like the reviews at all! What am I doing, I thought to myself. Take them back to the Animal Hospital at Baldwin, the place I initially took them after their adoption. Dr. Grillo and her tech Amber were both, well great. With the possible bladder cancer my mind was racing from letting her go to....Dr. G spoke with me and helped calm my nerves. Having been the caregiver for my daughter and later for my mother who were both placed under hospice care, the thought of loosing Liska...well you know. Anyway, we have a plan and I have the comfort of knowing that Liska is in caring and loving hands. August 2. Liska had her kidneys and bladder scanned today. May have the results tomorrow. August 3. No mass in bladder. She has a severe bladder inflammation and a UTI. Thanks you Dr. G! And I thought I may lose my little "wild child". See Banfield's tentative diagnosis below (scroll down past Liska's photo) then look up TCC. It will scare the heck our of you. Owners response was from previous post. You can see how classy the folks are.

I love this vet office and have been bringing my dogs here for over 10 years. One of my dogs had a huge health issue about 5 years ago and it was always flaring up in the middle of the night so I’d have to take him to an emergency vet office. We saw 4 different vets at the emergency vet place and none of them could figure out what was wrong with him. We finally made an appointment to see our normal vet and they were able to diagnose him on the first visit (he has IBD). I’ve seen every vet in this office and have had great experiences with all of them.
