How to Save Money at Avalon Family Vet

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Let me start with if you have a cat, this is NOT the place for you. Please do yourself a favor and keep looking. I saw a comment on here from a few months ago stating the same thing I just said basically. I like to give places benefit of the doubt. I also know some people can be dramatic. Sadly, she was not dramatic and is absolutely correct that there is a vet technician that doesn’t like cats. She makes it blatantly clear that she hates cats. My cat wouldn’t stop purring, she told me she has never heard a cat purr before and had no idea what “that noise” was. I had to explain to a vet technician what purring is and what it means. For the rest of the appointment, I was uncomfortable. If my cat wasn’t sick, I would have left right away. The next issue comes down to the billing. Everything seemed high, so I called around to other vets to get estimates of what they charged for the same thing or similar. Those 3 vets I called were within a $20-30 difference of each other. This vet compared to the most expensive vet I called was still a $150 difference. Pricing is EXTREMELY high. For example, the average for a one year rabies shot was $30, here it’s $60. That’s double of what other places charge! Lastly, I felt extremely disrespected and taken advantage of. I specifically asked for liquid medication. They came back stating the pills can be dissolved which was not true. I had to turn around and take my cat to emergency vet because it took me 2 hours to force the HUGE pill that I had to beak up into tinier pieces down. I should have stuck with my gut and stated I wanted liquid still, that’s on myself. I just don’t appreciate being talked into something when I know my pet. I personally felt I was taken advantage of during an upsetting time. The only nice thing I have to say is the receptionist is super nice and friendly. Overall, I will not be taking either of my cats back to this vet, and I strongly encourage you not to take your cats here either.

This vet clinic is the best! I was personally recommended to this vet from a neighbor who is a certified vet tech at this location. Dr. Rosado took care of one of our pets at a different clinic. He actually saved her life when her heart rate dropped during anesthesia. The environment is also clean and very welcoming. They even signed a welcoming card for Milo and Chloe! From dog toys to coffee for the owners, I definitely recommend this vet to anyone and everyone!

Had to bring my frenchie in, due to a very concerning skin rash. The staff were friendly, efficient, and kind. Dr. Morosi was very thorough and had a great "bedside manner" with my furbaby. I am happy with the results, as my doggo is back to normal with their skin. Thank you all for the great experience!

Very personable & friendly office! It was my first time coming to this office. My dog is 10 months old and has never been sick before, so I was definitely nervous. Everyone was helpful, sweet & made my dog feel very comfortable (which can be hard to do sometimes). They called to check in on her, as well. Will definitely be coming back to this office for all visits!

I want to start out by saying that the receptionist was extremely kind. However, if you have a cat, I’m not so sure this vet clinic is the best fit for you and your companion. I scheduled a technician appointment to get my kitten up to date on her vaccine, their website lets you notate which vaccines you are looking to get, I filled this out. When I arrived, reception was extremely friendly. However, the vet that saw my kitten told me she DOES NOT LIKE CATS, especially adult cats, but makes due with the kittens. I was taken aback by the comment, as it was uncalled for and made me feel uncomfortable, as surely she is aware a kitten will grow up to be an adult cat. Unfortunately, the overall uncomfortable experience did not end here. Although I had scheduled a technician visit, and notated which shots were needed, the vet did a wellness exam on her an was ready to send me on my way out without fulfilling the actual reason I scheduled this appointment. In fact, my kitten did not need a wellness exam as she had just completed one at the previous shelter. It became immediately clear that the vet did not review any of the paperwork, etc, that was provided as she was also not aware my kitten had previously been spayed. I let the vet know that she needed her vaccine, and was told that she would get it set up. The vet said that she wanted to take my kitten through the clinic because she is cute, and would bring her back once the vaccine is set up. I’m not sure if this is standard as my previous pets have all gotten their vaccines with me in the room, however when the vet returned my kitten, they had already given the shot to her. I would have appreciated better communication. I ended up paying for a wellness exam and the shot, which is fine as technically those services were performed. However, I would note that a wellness exam was not needed or requested when setting the appointment. Overall, I will not be taking either of my cats back to this vet, and I strongly encourage you not to take your cats here either.
