How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Horrible experience, this is my second time taking one of my dog for dental cleaning. The first time, the person authorized to do the theet removal was not at this location the day of my appointment. Today the machine is broken. I lived 45 minutes from this location, 3 hours on the road, burning gasosolun and my personal time wasted, an then hear this words, "we are sorry". Banfield might need to go back to be under PetSmart, it was a more responsible company.

Took my pup in for his first wellness check. Everything went well and the nurse, doctor and front desk staff were very nice and friendly. Had an appointment first thing in the morning, which I think I will continue to do.

I take my 2 dogs here as their primary veterinarian. They are competent and, most of the time cheaper than other vets i have been to on almost everything. Professional and knowledgeable. I also feel good that they are backed by the Petsmart brand. As a bonus I can pick up dog food and flea treatment all in one stop.

Terrible communication. Wrote my last name wrong even after I told them how to spell it. The directions for the medications for my kitten were written wrong. I had to look it up. If you pay with cash you NEED to make sure you count the money in their face. They miscounted cash and I didn't realize until I got home because I had it written down. I had no actual proof so I didn't say anything. The last straw was when my mom took him to an appointment and they lost her. I repeat... they lost her. How? Who the heck knows. She went to the bathroom, then went back to the same office.. 2 hours later waiting for them and they were supposedly looking for her/calling the number on file.. neither her or me have any calls from them.. who were they calling? THEY DON'T REPEAT INFORMATION BACK TO YOU to confirm it's correct. THEY BLAMED HER FOR USING THE BATHROOM... and since they couldn't find her and the office she was waiting in was in the twilight zone.. no paper work or anything was started on my kitten. The appointment was at 9:15.. my mom left around 1. I had to go pick him up and he wasn't ready until 4ish. When I made the appointment NOTHING was explained to me on how drop offs work. All he needed was a booster and revolution... 7 hours. Wat. I do not recall any apologies at least not sincere ones, just finger pointing. I even explained how I did not want to pay for the visit after that experience. They didn't care. I'm moving so this would of been my last visit anyways.. and I am SO GLAD. Terrible customer service. They don't care. On my first visit one of the vets did come out and speak to us.. so that's one point. That's it. Go somewhere else, if not make sure you're the one asking ALL the questions and recording everything.

Man I’ve had Banfield for 12 years (2 different dogs) I’ve used 4 different locations and now this one for the last year. Everytime I tried calling them they answered and put me on hold for 20-30 min just to make an appointment is the biggest hassle. We could try for days and it’s always the sam I’ve never had this issue at other locations. Place is convenient and people are nice but this needs to be addressed asap it’s crazy!
