Mixed Review

The service and customer support is excellent. Our dogs claims are paid promptly and I can always call and get a person on the phone without going through a tedious automated phone routine. However, the premiums have increased 30+% per year for 2 consecutive years!

The claims are easy to fill out and payment is pretty quick. I do wish we got more back or had more options for dogs that came to our homes a little later in their life.

The pre-existing clause is not clear

The pre-existing clause is not clear. My claim was denied due to "Pre-existing condition. There was no diagnosis at the prior to the insurance start date. The diagnosis was made at the time of his visit. If there was no diagnosis prior to the start date of the insurance, how can it be a pre-existing condition. Thinking about cancelling policy all together. I did read through the all of the policy documents and restrictions, and the wording is not clear. They just want your money. There is no compassion for the pet. Highly dissatisfied. Think carefully before using Pumpkin Pet Insurance.

Loopholes and Let-Downs...

It was at least a 4-star prior to actually needing them for larger issues. My corgi is 7, has been at a healthy weight and diet her whole life. No hereditary issues. Biggest concern we went to the vet for was a sprained knee a couple years back and a root canal from a tooth fracture a while ago (this was a result of chewing of those nylabones which have been banned from our house since). Everything else was routine. We moved states so I called to update our address. My premium actually dropped by almost half which was awesome. Two weeks later they DOUBLED it from there at the policy renewal. I called to ask for an itemization of costs being factored and was denied that information. They gave me the BS excuse it's inflation and rising vet costs and area etc... so in 14 DAYS inflation and vet costs doubled?... A couple months later end of 2025, we go in for a cleaning and find she needs extractions due to some crowding and decay. I've done more for her dental care than most dog owners I talk to. Embrace tried to deny me under it being 'preexisting' because of tartar notes from January 2022... I had to do their job, going back and forth for a month, calling the original clinic of the root canal because they tried to bypass notes from care done July 2023 that showed a cleaning was done, therefore this was not preexisting. They finally paid out. Around that time, corgi also had a spat of mobility issues. Not IVDD, nothing else crazy. Just wear and tear and a little arthritis. I was told on a call we had six PT visits covered. That's it. Tried to submit claims for two PT visits. They were denied. Turns out, even though the therapist is a licensed animal specialist PT, because she herself is not a licensed vet nor does she work in a clinic being shadowed on her appointments by a licensed vet, the claim was denied. That caveat was never disclosed to me. Even with a valid referral from a licensed vet (we're not out here doing this for fun) it doesnt matter. They find every reason they can to not pay. If I had known they would be so disappointing to work with, I would have been looking to change carriers before my corgi became a senior, and either paid a little bit more or just been done with insurance altogether. No better than health insurance for people. For major issues that don't fall into loopholes, I'm sure it's cheaper than paying out of pocket overall. The what-if is what kept me. But it still feels like wasted money and resources I'd prefer not to spend. I'm concerned that if I switch carriers now, she WILL have things considered pre-existing which will make it more expensive. Bottom-line: ask harder questions, read fine-print (which I did for the dental work and they still tried to pull a fast one or were just incompetent), evaluate if you can do without, or pick a different carrier for a little bit more.

Do not use this insurance

Do not use this insurance. They upsell you only to not actually provide you any significant coverage. Waste of money waste of time. Scam.

Spot Pet Insurance are liars, and thieves…

Spot Pet Insurance cs agents, are nothing more than a bunch of dishonest, money grabbing thieves… I switched from my farmer’s insurance pet policy, to spot pet insurance, 6 months ago, because of the low premium cost..My Shih Tzu got an ear infection, I took him to the vet, had it treated..During the visit they suggested that he may have allergies, because he licks his paws excessively, which he doesn’t..His paw licking is an indication that he is in pain because of the ear infection..None the less, he was treated for the ear infection, and he received his annual rabies shot, during the visit..I was charged for a wellness check/ office visit..the rabies, shot, and ear infection treatment..I submitted the claim to pet insurance, the same day, along with his medical records..1 week later I received a email, notifying me that,,the claim was denied, because I had failed to send the medical records..I then made contact with them over the phone, and sent the medical records for the 2nd time, while I had the agent on the line,,she confirmed that she received the records….A week later, which is this morning at 9:00 am cst, I received a email..stating that the claim was denied..citing a pre existing condition..At this point, I am not only surprised, but also pissed..I called them up, asked them what pre existing condition caused them to deny the claim,,She said to me, in May 2022, the vet wrote in their notes, that Gabriel my Shi Tzu, had allergies..I said to her I have lived with him for 4 yrs since that visit, we go to the vet for scheduled wellness checks, and him possibly having allergies has never been mentioned again, in 4 yrs..I mentioned to her that, This is Gabriel’s 1st ear infection in the 5 yrs that I have had him, and that my claim was for the ear infection, the office visit, and the rabies shot…nothing else..In the end they denied the claim, and their reason for the denying it, was for Something that was not mentioned, or listed on the invoice..These people are liars, scammers, and is only out to take your money, they provide you with with a false since of security, through offering you low preniums and low deductibles …But in reality, they have no intention on paying any claims..For those of you on here, that are exciting about the cheap premiums...,It’s nothing more than their predatory marketing strategy..designed to steal from you….Don’t Fall For It.. Cancel your policies today, and get a policy thru a reputable company..Spot Insurance should be named…Spit Insurance, as they lie, cheat, steal, and spit in your face, with no hesitation

Pets Plus Us bought my insurer, and has after years of paying premiums, raised my premium from $54/m to $380m over 8 years.

We will never insure another animal with this company. They are literally, not trustworthy. I mistakenly thought I was buying insurance from a reputable company when my dog was young, so that all those years where we never used it and just paid them, would mean that when my dog was old (almost 15) and needed care, I would be able to have that security. Instead, this isn't that. This is gambling. If I use the policy in the previous calendar year, my premium goes up. My dog got and survived cancer twice in 2024 and 2025 and each time they raised her rate MASSIVELY the next year. Now she is elderly, and she needs her policy, and they have intentionally made it so expensive for me to keep my elderly dog insured I may have to quit the coverage. (Because there have been months where my family had to buy less groceries to keep my senior dog insured.) They want young healthy dogs to pay pay pay pay in, and then when your dog gets old and needs them, they run you off your policy with unregulated and EXCESSIVE premium increases. When I opened my policy it was $54/m, $200 deductible, 20% copay in 2018. Now that my dog has too many pre existing conditions for me to get her any competitive policy anywhere else, they have me at a $380/m, $600 deductible, 20% copay. Just to keep her insured. And I know it's because they don't want to insure her anymore, they don't want to honour my policy, and there is no regulation saying they can't just renegotiate MY/OUR end of this deal every year, to reflect *their risk* and *cover their profit margins* (and then some.) Never in a single year did I ever pay them less than I was reimbursed... NEVER ONCE. and they still raised my rates through the roof for no reason besides my dog is now not purely handing over cash. I know this because my other senior dog is also insured, is also 15y old, and has had no cancer, and their rate has gone up 5-10% year on year. (And now, my other dog of the same age and type) is $260 LESS than my dog that needed her policy TWICE to have minor surgeries to remove cancerous lumps. Done at the local vet, not even a specialist. And they're burning me off her coverage now--holding my elderly dog hostage with these rates. They know she is too old for me to get her any other plan anywhere else, so they have me by the throat. We have new pets NOT insured with PPU. (Time will tell if we get burned the same way.) But this has been a nightmare. Lose her coverage, or pay the ransom amount for her health and safety. After 9 years of paying every month. 9 years of two dogs insured. and they're forcing me to choose now between something I paid for so that *it would be here for us now*--or my families groceries. That's the kind of company this is. THAT IS WHO THEY ARE. .
