How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Urban Animal

Preventive care

Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.

Compare prescription pricing

Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.

Consider pet insurance

Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

We are beyond grateful to have found Urban Animal on Capitol Hill when our regular vet couldn’t fit us in. One of our cats had been struggling with constipation for nearly a week, and the situation was becoming stressful for all of us. From the moment we arrived, the staff treated us with genuine warmth and professionalism. Myjah and Lexi were exceptionally kind, attentive, and knowledgeable — not only with our skittish cat but also with our other one, who was examined as well. Dr. Gambino was thorough, sensitive, and clearly very competent. They quickly identified the issue (a significant buildup) and administered the right treatment, including an enema. They didn’t just solve the problem on the spot — they also sent us home with clear instructions and the supplies we would need to continue care if needed. What stood out most was how human the experience felt. We were seen quickly, treated with compassion, and left with both relief and confidence in the care provided. The facility itself is modern, clean, and well-organized — and an added bonus: they offer free parking, which is rare and very welcome in Capitol Hill! The experience was so positive it honestly makes us reconsider where we’ll take our cats in the future. Thank you, Urban Animal, for treating our little family with such care. Dr. Peterson took care of my kitty who swallowed a piece of string. She was reassuring, kind, and professional. I am so happy that she did a great job and that he’s going to be okay. The staff are excellent as well. Great place to take your pets!

Always great service and information even when they are very busy. As a former vet receptionist, I know how demanding the field is and there’s definitely a lot of passion and effort from their team to get things right.

We took my girlfriend's cat here in a bit of an emergency. They were able to get him in very quickly and were very kind and thorough. We ended up needing to be transferred to an emergency vet, but Urban Animal was able to transfer information so there wasn't repeated tests and save my girlfriend some money which was very kind. I would highly recommend this vet. My girlfriend will likely be switching to them fulltime once we get kitty healthy again.

The staff were very kind, but the overall experience was disappointing due to poor communication and lack of transparency. They recently changed their policy from accepting walk-ins to requiring appointments, but never sent an email or any kind of notification to inform clients about this change. We specifically asked if it was better to come back another day, since we were just there for routine vaccinations—nothing urgent—but they told us to wait, estimating 20–30 minutes. That wait turned into over an hour and a half, and we ultimately left without being seen. It would have been more respectful of our time to simply let us know upfront that we should return another day, especially since this was not an emergency visit. We ended up wasting two hours for nothing. Also worth mentioning: on our last visit, they sold us deworming tablets with an expiration label that had been overwritten to show July 2026. Fortunately, I double-checked and found that the actual expiry date was July 2025. I was planning to report this during today’s visit, but since I won’t be returning, I’d rather share this here to help other dog families be aware. There are many other vets in the area with great reviews and, hopefully, better communication and attention to detail.
