Loopholes and Let-Downs...

It was at least a 4-star prior to actually needing them for larger issues. My corgi is 7, has been at a healthy weight and diet her whole life. No hereditary issues. Biggest concern we went to the vet for was a sprained knee a couple years back and a root canal from a tooth fracture a while ago (this was a result of chewing of those nylabones which have been banned from our house since). Everything else was routine. We moved states so I called to update our address. My premium actually dropped by almost half which was awesome. Two weeks later they DOUBLED it from there at the policy renewal. I called to ask for an itemization of costs being factored and was denied that information. They gave me the BS excuse it's inflation and rising vet costs and area etc... so in 14 DAYS inflation and vet costs doubled?... A couple months later end of 2025, we go in for a cleaning and find she needs extractions due to some crowding and decay. I've done more for her dental care than most dog owners I talk to. Embrace tried to deny me under it being 'preexisting' because of tartar notes from January 2022... I had to do their job, going back and forth for a month, calling the original clinic of the root canal because they tried to bypass notes from care done July 2023 that showed a cleaning was done, therefore this was not preexisting. They finally paid out. Around that time, corgi also had a spat of mobility issues. Not IVDD, nothing else crazy. Just wear and tear and a little arthritis. I was told on a call we had six PT visits covered. That's it. Tried to submit claims for two PT visits. They were denied. Turns out, even though the therapist is a licensed animal specialist PT, because she herself is not a licensed vet nor does she work in a clinic being shadowed on her appointments by a licensed vet, the claim was denied. That caveat was never disclosed to me. Even with a valid referral from a licensed vet (we're not out here doing this for fun) it doesnt matter. They find every reason they can to not pay. If I had known they would be so disappointing to work with, I would have been looking to change carriers before my corgi became a senior, and either paid a little bit more or just been done with insurance altogether. No better than health insurance for people. For major issues that don't fall into loopholes, I'm sure it's cheaper than paying out of pocket overall. The what-if is what kept me. But it still feels like wasted money and resources I'd prefer not to spend. I'm concerned that if I switch carriers now, she WILL have things considered pre-existing which will make it more expensive. Bottom-line: ask harder questions, read fine-print (which I did for the dental work and they still tried to pull a fast one or were just incompetent), evaluate if you can do without, or pick a different carrier for a little bit more.
