AKC is the best... have had others.

I am a big fan of pet insurance. We have had AKC for both of our dogs for six years. My company offered VPI at a discount so I switched one of our dogs to VPI to try it.In short, from VPI, the amount I spent on insurance would have easily covered my output for the dog bills. Bottom line, AKC has paid nearly every claim with little to no hassle. I am so sorry I switched. I would recommend AKC to everyone.

Waste of time and money!

The insurer does a disservice to the AKC name. They work really hard at one thing . . . denying your claim. I recently submitted a claim for a visit to the vet resulting from my dog ingesting a foreign object that irritated and lacerated his esophagus/larynx. Luckily he passed the object. However, he was subsequently left with an irritated throat and cough. The claim was denied because the policy does cover "coughs" . . . . Umm, that was the result of the injury, not the symptom! Their response was to ask whether or not I filed a claim for reconsideration as if that is standard operating procedure. As this is the second time I've been forced to jump through multiple hoops, I'm guessing it is. Moreover, after talking with one of their representatives who admitted the error, I learned that had they adequately considered my claim initially it would have been denied because they only cover such injuries it the foreign object was actually removed surgically! My point is their policy is nothing but loop holes. I'm not wasting one more second dealing with these buffoons. If you like beating your head against a concrete and wasting copious amounts of time filing paperwork, then this is the policy for you!!!!

Raised rates by 33% w/no claims ever made

While their customer services reps are very very nice, that doesn't in any way mitigate the fact that they raised my dog's monthly premium by 33% and my other dog is set for the same increase when her premium hits the 12 month mark early next year. While I expect modest yearly increases, no amount of justifying can explain this rate increase. In the 12 months I've had my dogs insured with them I've not made one claim. One customer service rep made it sound like the rate increase was specific to CA, but I am on a breed-specific board and I can tell you, the rates are going up by leaps and bounds all over the 50 states. I switched my dogs to Healthy Paws, which is based on the same model as Trupanion. I had assurances from them, verbally and in writing, that yearly premium increases are in the 5% - 7% range.

A Plus Plus all around

Adopted my Kitty from a local shelter at the end of September 2010, 3 1/2 years old, approximately. Put pet insurance on him right away. I have already had two claims with Trupanion, I have to say I was so pleasantly surprised that both were paid with no hassle within 10 days, and the Trupanion staff kept me well informed of the progress of the claim via email. I was a skeptic about pet insurance and now I am a believer. If you are on the fence about pet insurance with this company, I hope this review helps you make a decision.

Easy & Fast

Our one year old Whippet had a horrible accident and his rear leg was badly injured. He had several trips to the Vet to repair the injury. This was my first experience with submitting a claim. After getting our Vet to complete the forms, we faxed the documents for processing. Within a short period of time, the checks were in the mailbox. We are really glad we selected Trupanion for our dog's insurance.

Doesn't cover Ear Infections

I have paid my policy on time every month for nearly 2 years. I have never had to use their insurance, until recently my Chow Mix had an ear infection. Keep in mind, I have NEVER placed a claim on my pet. I sent in my claim for his ear infection. It took 2 weeks to review my claim with a result ending in NO COVERAGE?! I am so confused, why wouldn't an ear infection be covered? I understand they don't cover the exam, but what about the treatment? So basically I have had a policy that I have never used and when I attempted to use it, they won't cover something as simple as an ear infection.

Trupanion has been a "true financial companion"

In November, we rescued our first puppy, Katie. She is a beautiful beagle-mix, so sweet, and healthy (so we thought.) I am NOT a fan of insurance, but ourvet recommended Trupanion and they were offering a 30-day free trial, so we signed up. Just at the end of the trial period, Katie developed cherry eye, and we continued with the insurance to see how it would work. It has been four months now, and Trupanion has been a "true financial companion" for us. Within a few days of submitting a claim, we receive an email letting us know they received it, then an email that it's been approved, and then a check in the mail a week later. We (unfortunately) have had several claims in the last 3 months, and Trupanion has been efficient and responsive. Having a sick puppy is stressful enough. Knowing that 90% of the health bills are being covered helps alleviate some of that stress. THANK YOU!

Awesome

Having trupanion was the best thing I ever did for my dog. I got it when she was 7 wks and it has helped so much. I didn't use it much at first because they don't cover spading and vaccines so I thought about dropping it . Thank god I didn't in the past 2 months my Pitbull has torn her tplo or ACL and needed x rays meds and surgery I did the math and trupanion has paid so much of her bills. For the surgery alone it was over 3 thousand dollars which they paid all of up front and I only had to pay 300 hundred that's been the biggest bill but she also ate sugar free gum , chicken bones, so many things she is my million dollar dog and she is only 10 months .. But I have referred all my friends here it's the best thing I could do for my dog . I am a little bit of a worrier so she does go to the vet a lot but with this insurance and care credit it's ok. I can't say enough about them. O and when u call the reps are so nice and really do care
