Lack of information in initial phone call
Would have been nice to know about the ligament waiver form a vet can fill out while in discussion with the sales person about the policy. We talked about pre ex conditions for some time. I brought up ears and eyes if I’d have known about the form that needs to be completed in order not to have a pre ex on ligaments etc I could have asked the vet for her check of such during Charlys follow up exam now I need a separate visit meaning $$ to do so. Also have called multiple times and never got a person answering: always need to leave message for a call back which doesn’t happen right away

Cat Emergency!
I had an emergency with my cat, and had to take her to the emergency vet hospital. Without the insurance, it would have cost me around $10,000 to get her healthy again. I especially appreciated the fact that the hospital was willing to apply first to Trupanion before they asked for my share. Most veterinary offices and hospitals would make me pay upfront, and then reimburse me. They clearly trusted Trupanion.

I’ve been with Healthy Paws since 2017…
I’ve been with Healthy Paws since 2017 and insured my dog continuously for years. During that time, I submitted only a handful of very small claims — none of which ever exceeded my annual deductible. For most of the policy’s life, Healthy Paws essentially collected premiums without paying anything out. Recently, my dog had a legitimate health issue for the first time that actually resulted in a payout. Coverage worked as expected, which I appreciated. However, almost immediately after this first meaningful claim, my premium increased significantly (>230%). The timing makes it difficult not to feel like premiums stay reasonable only as long as you don’t use the insurance — and once you do, pricing adjusts sharply regardless of your long-term history or prior low utilization. I understand that pet insurance is risk-based and premiums can increase over time, but after nearly a decade of loyalty and minimal claims, the increase felt disproportionate and discouraging. It undermines the trust you build by paying consistently for years in case you ever actually need coverage. Advice to others considering Healthy Paws: Healthy Paws does pay claims, but be prepared for substantial premium increases once you file one that matters — even if you’ve been a low-risk, long-term customer. If you’re evaluating providers, look closely at how they handle premium adjustments after claims, not just initial pricing.

Easy and rapid reimbursement, great customer service
Easy and rapid reimbursement. I complete the claim while sitting in the veterinary parking lot. The only documentation I have needed to forward are the SOAP notes and invoice. No further documentation or explanation has been needed. Reimbursement usually received within a week.
