Beware of Embrace Pet Insurance – Inconsistent Claims, Shifting Denials, and Impossible Exclusions

I’m sharing my experience so other pet owners can make an informed decision before choosing Embrace. At first, Embrace seemed fine. They approved several claims for my cat’s GI issues, parasite treatment, suspected FIP, and even an ear infection. But once the claims became more complex, everything changed. Embrace began denying claims using shifting and contradictory explanations: • They claimed a gastrointestinal coronavirus titer was “related” to a pre‑adoption upper respiratory infection, even though my cat has not had a single sneeze or any URI symptoms since the day I adopted her. • They reclassified a temporary URI exclusion as permanent based on a fecal test that had nothing to do with respiratory disease. • They approved a December visit for ataxia, head tilt, and neurological symptoms, but then denied a nearly identical visit in January by claiming those same symptoms were “related” to a minor pre‑policy trauma from a year earlier. • They denied medication they had previously approved for months, calling their own approval an “error.” • Every time my cat showed a new symptom, they extended exclusions another 12 months. When I tried to discuss these contradictions with an adjuster, the conversation went nowhere. I explained the medical facts calmly and clearly, but logic fell on deaf ears. The adjuster simply repeated the denial and told me I could “file an appeal and send it to them,” even though they were the same person who wasn’t listening in the first place. If they dismissed my explanation, I have little confidence they would treat my veterinarian’s medical opinion any differently. The pattern became clear: Embrace will connect any condition to any past symptom to avoid paying a claim. Their interpretation of “pre‑existing” is so broad that it becomes meaningless. If your pet ever sneezed, limped, or tilted their head once, Embrace may use that to deny unrelated conditions a year later. I canceled my policy and filed a complaint with the Maryland Insurance Administration. Pet owners deserve transparency and consistency; Embrace has given me neither.

Paid hundreds instead of thousands of $$!

MetLife pet insurance has saved my family so much money and has been pretty easy to work with. Upload documentation online or through the app and receive reimbursement. My dog has had her ACL replaced (a $4,000 surgery) and also had a cancerous tumor removed (around $2,000), plus another cancer scare and thanks to pet insurance, we paid only a fraction of the cost!

Very pleased with Spot pet insurance

Very pleased with Spot pet insurance. Web portal is easy to use. They're prompt with claims and payments and easy to reach if you want a live person! Also my recent claim for a tooth extraction was covered to my absolute delight because pet dental work is very expensive. Whew! Thank goodness for Spot :)

Healthy Paws has always been excellent!

Healthy Paws has always been excellent to us & our many, many, rescued & adopted pets insured by them since 2017! Good communication, quick turnaround times, easy upload process, reasonable about claims, even when we've had more claims in 1 year vs another (due to senior dogs being sick)... Thank you HP!

Discourages adoption

We adopted a dog with no known health issues (he had a veterinary exam from the rescue nonprofit). The rescue required we take him to our own vet within two weeks of adoption so we did that. At our very first visit, our vet noticed signs of rear leg pain (she speculated possibly just strain from his weight, arthritis, or injury). We later found out that he had two torn acls. Because of the requirement of our rescue and the waiting period for the insurance, this was considered a pre-existing condition and they said that nothing related to his legs would be covered (even if he developed arthritis later - the scans showed no arthritis currently). I do understand that this was a preexisting condition, it just wasn’t known to us. It was frustrating that we tried to do the right thing by adopting and were penalized for a history we had no way of knowing and was not disclosed to us (the rescue should have known about it). I wish Spot would consider additional policies that are fairer to rescue dogs because frankly the current policies discriminate against them.
