I got healthy paws insurance thinking it would cover unexpected illness or accidents. my puppy got sick 5 days after opening the insurance and when I filed a claim they said they couldn't reimburse me because they didn't cover that specific illness, then they said it was during the grace period. I was unsatisfied so I asked for a cancellation of policy, on their site they promise a 30 day satisfaction guaranteed full refund. but when I reached out to their costumer service they wouldn't give me a full refund! then they just stopped answering my emails.
We've had policies on our dogs for several years now, and have had an extremely positive experience w/HealthyPaws. Most recently, our 11-year-old pup was diagnosed with liver cancer, very unexpectedly. His claims for diagnostics, surgery, and hospitalization were all covered quickly and without a fight. It's a comfort knowing that we found a company that stands behind their policy and allows us to focus on getting and keeping our beloved fur-babies if something unexpected happens.
We have two rescue puppers that both came from a bad situation. They are now 7½ years old 5½, we foster-failed them when they were both very young, weeks old. We immediately got pet insurance when we adopted them. We first used PetFirst, because I was attracted to the wellness package, but I was not very happy with the coverage. Within a year we switched to Healthy Paws because I liked their coverage better, read excellent reviews, and realized that we needed insurance for life changing events (sickness and/or accidents). We wanted peace of mind that if something should happen to our little furry family members, that it would be a choice of “will this give them the best quality of life?” as opposed to “can we afford this?”. I tell you; the last two years have been a ringer for us, and we have never needed this insurance more.
Our older pup was bitten by a rattlesnake, got a really bad MRSA infection that took a year to recover from and when we moved into our new home, he developed grass allergies (of all things?!). He’s currently being treated by a dermatologist for that allergy and we are diligently working on redoing our landscaping and ripping out the grass…all for him. Outside of the deductible and some small exclusions (i.e. exam fees) all of his vet bills were covered by Healthy Paws, we opted for the 90% reimbursement option years ago and have maintained that coverage.
Our younger pup ripped a nail completely off, but interesting enough the quick remained (very painful as it was completely exposed). And then unfortunately, 3 weeks ago she was hit by a car and had to have a total hip replacement. She also cracked a tooth in the accident that still needs to be addressed once she is stronger from her above operation. We were there when it happened, saw it, and I can’t even begin to explain how we were feeling, seeing her almost killed, her suffering, and knowing that we failed to keep her safe. That she is alive and will be ok, has kept us sane. She was IMMEDIATLEY taken to a vet, stabilized, and treated for her injuries. As terrifying as this all was, at no time did we think about the cost or that we will have to surrender her, let her suffer in pain, or euthanize her. I lost 3 close family members and my job this year. The thought of not having her treated never even crossed our minds.
All of this is thanks to Healthy Paws. In the craziness of 2020, I am so thankfully that we had the insight to get insurance and grateful that Healthy Paws has been so awesome.
Their claim filing is a complete breeze, it takes less than 2 minutes if you have your vet email you the receipt and any necessary medical records. If you have any questions, their customer service has been very responsive. And their turn-around time for reimbursement is very quick, within days!
From the beginning I have told all of our pet parent friends that they need to get pet insurance. Do your own research and get what works for you, but I am a strong advocate for this company.
Stay safe and healthy!

My dog recently tore her ACL and Healthy Paws made the experience a lot more bearable knowing I could focus on taking care of my dog and not how much it was going to cost. The first claim I made was a smaller bill for x-rays and it was approved in less than week, but I opted for a check through mail and am still waiting for it (3wks later). For the claim for the actual surgery it took them about 2 wks to process, but this time I opted for direct deposit and it was in my account 48hrs after it was approved. It was very easy to file, you just send a picture of the invoice and customer service was great when I had a question. I had a response back via email by the next day. They even sent a email with well wishes while my dog was recovering. Overall, I've had a great experience with them, will continue to use them, and will recommend them to anyone.
We adopted Georgie from Shaggy Dog Rescue who saved him from a shelter in TX and he made his journey to us via Rescue Road Trips. We didn't know much about his background so decided to start researching pet insurance. It took awhile to really research all of the providers on the market and after reading countless reviews we went with Healthy Paws. Second best decision we have made when it comes to Georgie (first, was deciding to apply to be in the running to adopt him).
So fast forward to about 1.5 years after he joined the family. Our groomer noticed a bump by his boy part. We immediately got him into his primary care vet who diagnosed him with mast cell cancer. On to the surgical consultant and resulting procedure (with an overnight hospital stay). While it was nerve-racking to be away from our fur baby, one thing that I didn't worry about was his insurance coverage. Healthy Paws has been nothing but amazing when we have submitted previous claims for his meds, etc. After his surgery I submitted the invoices and the reimbursement was promptly processed. That's not even the best part. The Claws & Paws Protector, Tim W., emailed me to ask how Georgie was going. I couldn't even believe that! That's when I knew that we made the right choice for pet insurance for our fur baby. It's more care and concern than I have EVER or probably ever will receive from my bi-ped insurance providers. Thank you Healthy Paws for providing exemplary customer service and going above and beyond to make pets (and the pet parents) feel cared for and valued.
Read your reviews. Do you research. Review your fur baby's needs or possible needs. Pick the best provider for you. If you choose Healthy Paws, I am confident that you will have the best possible experience when insurance is the last thing on your mind.
hello, I cancelled my membership with you in August and I am looking at my credit card bills and see you have been charging me without my knowledge or permission. I am owed 3 months worth of payments back and have been trying to find a login or somewhere to recancel because apparently you guys didnt get the message the first time. There is nowhere on your website that is helpful for actual customers only stuff for trying to lure people into becoming a member. I am deeply upset and very very angry and will definetly be telling EVERYONE ON EVERY DOG PAGE I FIND NOT TO USE YOU
Trupanion has been great from customer service, ease of submitting claims & follow up.
Trupanion has been great. I did a lot of research & finally decided on Trupanion. I asked my veterinarian & local pet ER & all recommended Trupanion. It is more expensive but I felt it offered the best coverage & I have been very happy with my choice. Their website is easy to navigate & submit claims & their phone customer service has been terrific. Those answering the phones are friendly & have been very helpful. Claims have been processed quickly with everything covered as expected. They keep you posted on the status of your claims via text messages & emails. I highly recommend Trupanion.

I wish I could say SPOT will have your back, but I can’t…
We purchased the policy when my puppy was 3 months old. He got into trouble and swallowed rocks twice: once before and once during the insurance waiting period. The first time, he went to the ER for an endoscopy to remove them from his stomach. The second time the Dr made him puke it out. He had diarrhea for a couple weeks after due to all these procedures, but it went away after some time. It was all paid out of pocket ($4K) because the policy wasn’t active at this time. Too bad timing didn’t work out but that was the rules we agreed to, no hard feelings there.
After the waiting period was over, our dog started causing destruction around the house when left alone. He bit entire corners off the walls and literally ate two holes through the wall when left alone inside a gated kitchen for less than 1 hr. We consulted with the vet and they wrote a letter diagnosing separation anxiety and recommending behavioral treatment, which SPOT claims is covered.
We submitted the letter from the Dr and letter from an animal behaviorist outlining a treatment plan to SPOT for approval. They denied coverage claiming that eating rocks when he’s with us is a sign of separation anxiety and is therefore a pre-existing condition. I argued it is unreasonable to claim that a behavior observed when accompanied is a symptom of separation anxiety, but they disagreed. They also disagreed with the Dr’s letter that, literally and word by word, states the diagnosis for separation anxiety is unrelated to eating rocks. SPOT formulated their own diagnosis for my dog that justifies rejection of coverage and denied the claim.
At some point the diarrhea came back and lasted for weeks. The vet put him on medication for a month but wasn’t getting better so they recommended doing a full blood panel to diagnose any physical issues. SPOT rejected coverage for the vet’s medication, the blood panel and diagnostic tests claiming that because he had diarrhea before, it is a pre-existing condition and no treatment would be covered.
I’m not one to leave bitter reviews around the internet but I at least felt I had to share my experience and warn others.
