Unhappy Puppy Parent
True to form, Trupanion, like other insurers, denied my claim, on the basis that the issue was a preexisting condition, dating back to an alleged diagnosis by our vet that preceded the start date of insurance. Problem is we were never advised by our vet that the condition existed until recently when we elected to have the dental surgery for which the claim was made. After denial, we consulted with our vet, concerned that we might have neglected our dog years ago. She reviewed her records and found nothing that supported the denial. It was, indeed, a new condition in her opinion. She intends to challenge the denial on our behalf to seek reversal. But we were very disappointed. We will keep the insurance in place, though, because our dogs are middle-aged and no doubt issues will arise that will be age-related and for which we will expect reimbursement. Can't, however, endorse or refer new clients to Trupanion, because, like most if not all insurers, there are two phases to insurance: coverage determination; and then, if you make it through that phase, reimbursement. The denial came fast, though, I grant you that. Within 24-hours of the procedure.
