Disingenuous Deductible
I have the $250 deductible 80% coverage plan but it is disingenuous to call this a $250 deductible. It is a $300 deductible because only 80% of eligible costs go towards the deductible. In my insurance policy it says: "DEDUCTIBLE: Your pet’s deductible is shown on the pet schedule of the declarations page. Your pet’s deductible shall apply once per coverage term. " My declarations page says: Coinsurance (Your Share): 20% Reimbursement (Our Share): 80% Annual Deductible: $250 Example, if I have a $1,000 vet bill that are all eligible costs I would expect to pay $400 (assuming its the first claim of the year). This is made up of a $250 deductible and $150 (($1,000-$250)*.20=$150) and Healthy Paws would reimburse me $600. ((($1,000-$250)*.80=$600) HOWEVER, Healthy Paws looks at the $1000 bill and ($1,000*80%= $800) because "I am responsible for 20% of all vet bills and healthy paws reimburses 80% of total vet bills". They they take the $250 deductible out of the $800 and I am only reimbursed $550 and not $600. This is truly a $300 deductible. I was told by a customer service liaison (who was incredibly insulting) that deductibles in pet insurance work differently than deductibles such as in homeowners, car, or health insurance policies. I pay a good amount of money per month for my policy, I've held it for almost 4 years now. I would expect more from this company.

Unrealistic claims policy
I submitted a claim for an ear infection on an 18-month-old Goldendoodle. It was denied because he had an ear infection before that was treated and was corrected. He got another ear infection unrelated to the first and I was told the denial was because of a previous instance. I was told that we would not get a claim for an ear infection approved for the rest of his life. Dogs with floppy ears periodically get ear infections and Pets Best knew what kind of dog he was when we signed up. If I had wanted catastrophic coverage only, I would have expected the price to be substantially lower than it is. It appears that unless you sign up your dog at birth, little except catastrophic events would be covered. What a waste of time and money. I cancelled the policy.

insurance premium went up 30% after 1st year with no claims filed
After paying $29 a month for the 1st year of my puppy's life they raised the premium to $37 a month and we had not even used the policy one time. I don't understand why our policy went up 30% after 1 year when they advertise that they don't raise premiums for filing a claim. We never even filed a claim so why did it go up so much?

First of all, I had a mobile Veterinarian come to my home for an initial visit with my miniature poodle. It was a great experience. When she was at the end of her visit and exam and a couple of small but needed procedures, she gave me a Trupanion page that told about the Trupanion services. It had a code number on it, and the vet explained how much this insurance had helped some of her patient's "parents" by saving them a tremendous amount of $ through using this plan for their unexpected treatments as well as hospitalization. Then the Vet said that since she had provided treatment for my dog, I could get a free month if I signed up for the insurance in the next 24 hours. That perked my interest, because my dog is 7 years old, and the Vet told me of 3 major problems that miniature poodles are susceptible of getting. She also said she trusts Trupanion's Insurance company completely, as it is the 2nd best rated Pet insurance in the USA. That made me curious, and I looked up more info on the internet. Next, after talking with my husband about looking into this plan for our sweet little dog. I called the Trupanion Chat line and very soon was talking with Katherine on the Chat line. I had many questions and concerns, but Katherine is clearly an expert in this field. No question was too difficult for her. I felt very comfortable and interested in her knowledge and answers. She helped me through it all, and told me to call her or if I had any concerns or questions. Once my husband and I realized this would be a great worry free plan for our dog, Kathleen offered to get us signed up with this insurance plan. We definitely are newbee's with having pet insurance, but we feel thankful and relieved to have it available for our sweet dog for the rest of her life And for any other pets we might aquire.

My issues have mostly to do with price plans and such. I have $1000 deductible at a little more than $50 a month. That’s $600 a year. Recently my dog needed one stitch on a slight wound: $550! So I am rethinking this policy & probably will cancel.

Can’t beat this customer service
Trupanion has been amazing - I got a pre-approval for my dog’s surgery and it was super easy - filed the claim after her surgery and was paid in 2 days! This service is amazing and I would never have a dog without it!
