A Life Saver
I took out insurance through Nationwide when we added our GSD to the family. I knew I was going to have too much invested in his training and becoming a family member to risk losing him over a decision to maybe not have surgery in case of an emergency. I never really liked paying the premiums, but a couple of months ago it was a life saver for my dog. He started acting abnormal and in distress one evening, late of course, like nearly midnight. I tried to settle him down so I could get some sleep. He just wouldn't settle and was in distress. So... of to the 24hr Vet. ER at 1:00 am. What piece of mind it gave me knowing I could request the best and appropriate treatment with piece of mind. The initial xrays showed a possible obstruction with some of the organs out of place. There was time and the ER recommended me taking him to the Vet. first thing. The Vet. did updated photos and determined his organs were shifted and not right. Well, emergency surgery and he was save from Mesenteric Volvulus that is pretty rare and about 90 % fatal. My GSD made a quick and full recovery. The thousands of dollars in bills were TOTALLY covered minus my deductible with ZERO issues in filing the claim. OUTSTANDING SERVICE!!!! Now I pay my premiums happily each month. :-)

Pets Best is a ripoff
I purchased Pets Best pet insurance because I was a Progressive auto insurance customer and got a discount for bundling. I purchased the policy within a month of adopting my dog from Animal Control Services to financially protect myself in the event the dog was ill. My dog scratched quite a bit so I went through the checklist of fleas, allergies, and anxiety to see what could be causing my dog to scratch so much. Took the dog to the vet and they said it was allergies and to give the dog OTC antihistamine. That didn’t work so the next vet visit had us buy Apoquel that cost almost $3/tablet. I submit the vet visit claims to Pets Best and they take 2 months to review the paperwork just to decline to cover the expenses because of “pre-existing conditions”. The whole point of purchasing the policy was to protect me from whatever pre-existing conditions the dog had before I adopted her. Pets Best ending up being $435 down the drain for a worthless policy.

I (mostly) love Truepanion
Overall I have been happy with Trupanion and appreciate the peace of mind it offers in ensuring my pet would be able to be treated in the event of a grave injury and illness. However, really frustrated that I was charged the $250 deductible for my recent claim even though it was for the same condition for which a claim was paid out back in 2018. The condition-based deductible was a major selling point for, so to see it not being enacted is very disapopinting.

I have only had this insurance for a short time and feel it's a bit expensive. However, it beats the potential tens if thousands I would pay in vet fees if something happened to my dog. Serena was very helpful and really seemed to know the product well when I asked questions.

The experience itself is wonderful--my vet submits the invoice to Trupanion while I wait, and no more (usually) than 5 minutes later, the vet is reimbursed. I then only have to pay my 10% share. So easy and less hassle than paying the bill, submitting the claim, and waiting to be reimbursed. The only reason I didn't rate the experience a 10 is that not everyone wants to pay a monthly premium, and we do spend a fair amount annually on those. But for recurring skin and allergy issues, it's been more than worthwhile.
