Saved Duncan's Life

I took out pet insurance from VPI approximately 4 years ago when my precious shih tuz was 7 years old. He'd never had any issues other than seasonal allergies. His blood work and physicals were perfect. My husband teased me about taking out the insurance, but agreed that the savings on the routine care made sense. A few months later Duncan injured himself and spent several days screaming in pain as we tried to figure out what was going on with him. One day I got the call that said pick up Duncan and his films ASAP...he needs to go to the neurologist. Yes, a doggie neurologist. The doctor came in and explained he had a herniated disc, the treatment, the prognosis, and the after care. I was conflicted over saving his life, the concern that he would have a high quality of life post surgery, and the cost. I called my closest dog mom friend and sobbed as she advised me. Knowing I would have to come out of pocket with the almost $5000 and hope for reimbursement she advised to do whatever was required to provide him with the best quality of life. Well, 10 days later my less than stoic patchwork dog (we keep him long...he had shaved patches all over) was released to me for approximately $6000. The after care was brutual - 14 medications dispensed in various intervals every 2 hours around the clock. He was completely crate confined for 30 days excluding going outside. I took him to work with me in a stroller to provide the required care. Every bit of it was completely
