My dog has been covered by VPI Superior since we adopted her six years ago. Several weeks ago we awoke to find she was having some difficulty breathing, and took her immediately to our vet's office. Shortly thereafter she was transferred to the emergency hospital since her condition was critical. She stopped breathing on arrival and was resuscitated. In spite of blood transfusion and oxygen treatment, she continued to deteriorate. She had an ultrasound which showed a major heart problem and likely pulmonary embolism. Her prognosis was extremely poor, she was struggling to breathe and highly distressed in spite of oxygen, so we made the extremely difficult decision to let her go. Not only has VPI so far denied the majority of the claimed expenses itemized on her vet bill ($3095 for her one day of tests and critical care- we have received $205)they did not cancel her policy as I asked in writing when submitting the claim, and have charged another premium since she died!! The stated reason was that the diagnosis was "undetermined"- but the vet was trying to save her life and there was no time to put her through more tests - in fact she could not be taken off oxygen for long enough to carry out additional tests. I do not see the point of paying for insurance that gives you virtually no reimbursement in such circumstances.
