Avoid this insurance company

Do not select this company. They used to be a decent pet insurance company but have failed to measure up anymore. My dog was diagnosed with a condition of his gums which is akin to an autoimmune immune disease and my vet recommended an emergency dental cleaning to remove the plaque and bacteria from his gums as it was causing ulcers on his gums. I then have to brush his teeth daily, use dental wipes and dental chews. They refused to cover the vet required dental cleaning as their policy is not to pay for cleanings no matter what the condition. They are across the board on this. This is going to be a lifelong condition for him so no cure. They don’t care about the condition except it’s their policy. Also they pay less when they cover a bill, apply the reimbursement level and then subtract the deductible. You get less if a reimbursement from them. They used to be a decent company but not any more. I got a new puppy and decided this was not the pet insurance I wanted for her. So disappointed in this company. They have gone downhill.

Sharlene,

We’re never happy when we can’t cover a claim for one of our family members and sorry to hear about your frustrations regarding the Healthy Paws dental coverage. We make every effort to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Our complete accident and illness plan covers injury to the teeth if it is caused by an accident, including extractions and reconstruction of damaged teeth. Like some other pet insurance companies, our plan does not cover the regular dental care required to maintain dental hygiene for the pet and this has not changed since we first started offering our policy back in 2010. By making routine dental cleaning part of the pet parent's financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. Our policyholders value comprehensive accident/illness coverage and unlimited benefits at reasonable rates, which is why they choose to assume the responsibility of paying for those costs.

We also make every effort to inform our clients on how our reimbursement calculations work and this has also been consistent since 2010. We include this information (including examples) on our website within our "Frequently Asked Questions" page. Our process for calculating reimbursements are approved by each state's Department of Insurance and are based upon the deductible/reimbursement level a client chooses at enrollment. There are a number of other pet insurance companies that use this same method for calculating reimbursements. As with any policy with a deductible, the deductible has to be met before any claim reimbursement. Give your fur baby a big hug from us.
