After much comparison shopping, I determined Petplan was the best value. Many people complain about the price increases, but even with yearly 23% price increases, it's still HALF the second lowest insurance plan I could find, and the coverage is much better. It's important to understand what your plan covers (unexpected medical costs), what it doesn't (pre-existing conditions, preventative care), and the claim process (all vet records for 2 years). It's imperative you get a checkup including dental at least once per year AND have a vet visit immediately after getting insurance so they can't claim pre-existing conditions (which they have every right to when you can't prove your pup was healthy when insurance started!) Also, ask to have your policy underwritten so they have to state what the pre-existing conditions are to avoid surprises down the road (you can cancel your insurance for full refund within 30 days if you're not happy with the results). Be aware they consider SYMPTOMS of a condition from before the policy began to be pre-existing. So if your dog had diarrhea, vomiting, lame leg...there's hundreds of conditions they might consider pre-existing (if there's a solid vet record stating the CAUSE of the diarrhea there's less likelihood they'll consider that condition a symptom of unrelated conditions). In my experience, claims and pre-approvals can be processed in as little as 4 days or up to a month. All my claims have always been submitted with all required paperwork, including 2 years of vet records, but sometimes it requires some back and forth with the percentage they apply (80% specialist, vs I have 90% coverage) and pre-existing condition exclusions, (they say it is, I say it isn't and have the underwriting/ vet records to back it up). Usually it just takes a call or a letter from the vet and they pay the amount they should. Fax and their App are MUCH faster then submitting via email or regular mail, but if you send via email at least you have a record that all necessary info was sent (and received) so sometimes I do both fax and email.
Because they sometimes are slow uploading documents, claim pre-existing when it's not (and I can prove it with vet records), and don't follow the terms of their contract unless you quote it back to them, I'm taking off two stars. However, I feel like it's the best value overall, they've always paid the full amount they should have, in the end, and the coverage is EXCELLENT. I have recommended them to frie
