Trupanion Not All It's Cracked Up to Be

Out of 10

After being financially devastated by my old dog's chronic illnesses, I researched pet insurance for the young dogs and kittens. Trupanion got a lot of really good reviews, so I went with them. In the three years I've had this insurance, the monthly fees have more than doubled per pet (the original $23 per month is now $50 each for my dogs). I've made two claims in the last year, and in both cases, the insurance check came nowhere near the 90% they claim they pay. If your animal is injured or sick and you bring him into the vet for treatment, Trupanion doesn't pay for the examination of the injured/sick pet. So if your bill is $100 and $50 of it was for the examination, you're only going to get 90% of $50, not the full amount you paid. In their defense, Trupanion did state they don't pay examination fees in their policy (which I missed in the small print), but with the doubled monthly fees, I am finding this insurance not all it's cracked up to be.

Rosemary-
I'm so sorry your claims experience was disappointing.

We absolutely try our hardest to be very transparent about what is and is not covered under our one plan. Our policy wording is written in plain English, contains no "fine print" and is available on our website for ANYONE to read-policyholder or not. We also email that policy wording to everyone who enrolls as soon as they enroll.

We also have several informational pages on our website that list out what is and is not covered. Our Policy Overview page (http://trupanion.com/pet-insurance/policy-overview) breaks down everything about our page. Our FAQ Page (http://trupanion.com/pet-insurance/faqs) lists out the most commonly asked questions we see and answers them. What is covered and what is not covered are the top two questions on that page.

I am sincerely sorry your experience so far has not been great. I hope the above resources will ensure you are crystal clear on exactly what your pets are and are not covered for to avoid any more disappointment going forward.

Our customer service department is also full of amazing pet-loving folks who know our policy wording front to back, and they're always happy to answer questions and go over your coverage. You can reach them 7 days a week at 1-800-569-7913.

You should consider yourself lucky that your young pets aren't yet having the issue's that your old pet does. You aren't going to get huge claims paid if your pets aren't sick and you don't have huge bills. Insurance is an expense that will pay us back if we are in need. As a pet owner we can deal with normal vet bills its the large vet bills that can financially devastate us. That's when insurance comes to the rescue and that's when we really need it to. Not for the $100 vet bills. (If you raise your deductible you can lower your monthly premium.)

Trupanion paid 1037 of a 2300.00 bill. My bank put a 7 day hold on the checks they sent and only accepted them because I'm an excellent customer of theirs, they reject their checks.. Anyone else have this issue with payment by check from Trupanion?
