VPI was recommended to me by my veterinarian based on their likelihood to honor their policies and pay out on submitted claims. Foolishly I took my vets advice and opened a VPI Major Medical Plan policy (what is supposed to be their best coverage)for my, at the time, six month golden retriever Murphy in mid-February of this year. In mid-March my dog was treated for a bad case of gastroenteritis (diarrhea) and additionally examined for a potential foreign body obstruction. After submitting a claim for what I considered a routine treatment, and one that would no doubt be covered, my claim was denied. The reason given, after a requesting and review of my dog's entire medical history, was that this treatment of falls under the occurrence of a pre-existing condition. Since my extremely young puppy had a previous occurrence of diarrhea prior to him being covered VPI excluded him and refused to pay the claim. Needless to say, I was stunned. Any company that claims to have the on-staff veterinary experience to ensure claims are reviewed fairly and expertly would know that diarrhea can be caused by basically anything in a puppy. For example, my dog had a hard time with teething during the exact time of his diarrhetic episode. VPI claimed all the instances were related and therefore coverage was excluded. Upon calling customer service I was additionally told that not only is this claim not being honored, but that my puppy would have to remain diarrhea free for six consecutive month
