I got laughed at by my husband for enrolling our dogs in VPI and then one of them got run over and we spent $2000 in vet bills. We got reimbursed $1500 by VPI no questions asked. All of our dogs are adopted from shelters and so had pre-existing conditions that aren't covered: one isn't covered for allergies, one isn't covered for heartworms, and one isn't covered for household intoxications. However, when you think about everything else out there that could cost a small fortune to treat (hit by car, bit by snake, disk disease, broken bones, torn CCL, etc) having insurance is worth the peace of mind. I am a veterinarian myself and have to see good dogs euthanized for financial reasons and it is incredibly sad for everyone. I recommend VPI to all of my clients so that I can avoid those situations.
