DO NOT USE FOR FRENCHIES EVER!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT USE FOR FRENCHIES EVER. I am writing this review to document how deeply disappointed I am with Spot Pet Insurance and how completely they failed my dog and me. My experience has been financially devastating, emotionally exhausting, and ultimately has shown me that Spot does not provide the protection or reliability they advertise. 1. I paid monthly premiums, but Spot paid nothing when it mattered I paid $75 per month for coverage, trusting that Spot would help in the event of an emergency. Over the course of the year, that totaled $900. Despite this, Spot did not cover a single dollar of my dog’s care — not routine care, not emergencies, not hospitalization. 2. Spot refused to cover a life‑threatening emergency My French Bulldog suffered a severe respiratory attack that required: Oxygen Overnight hospitalization Lab work Emergency care The total cost was $4,500. Spot denied the entire claim, citing “BOAS” in his records — even though he is a French Bulldog, a brachycephalic breed by nature. This was not a pre‑existing condition; it was an acute emergency. I appealed six times, and every appeal was denied. 3. Spot also refused to cover medically necessary BOAS surgery Following the emergency, my dog required BOAS surgery to prevent future respiratory crises. This surgery cost approximately $5,000. Spot denied this as well, again using the BOAS label as a blanket exclusion. 4. Routine care was also not covered Despite paying monthly premiums, Spot did not cover: Vaccines ($60 each) Wellness exams ($125 each) Any routine care whatsoever This meant I was paying for insurance and paying full price for basic veterinary care. 5. My total out‑of‑pocket cost last year was over $10,000 Between the emergency hospitalization, surgery, and routine care, I paid over $10,000 out of pocket, on top of the premiums I paid to Spot. Spot contributed nothing. 6. Spot’s exclusions make the policy nearly useless for French Bulldogs French Bulldogs are prone to respiratory issues, which is exactly why owners seek insurance. Spot’s approach — excluding anything related to BOAS, even acute emergencies — makes their policy effectively worthless for this breed. If a Frenchie can’t get coverage for respiratory emergencies, hospitalization, or surgery, then the policy has no meaningful value. 7. The appeals process was exhausting and unproductive I submitted multiple appeals with documentation, vet notes, and explanations. Every appeal was denied with the same generic reasoning. There was no meaningful review, no nuance, and no willingness to consider the actual medical situation. Conclusion My experience with Spot Pet Insurance has been overwhelmingly negative. I paid monthly premiums for a year and received zero coverage, even during a life‑threatening emergency. I was left with more than $10,000 in veterinary bills and no support from the company I trusted to help protect my dog. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Spot to any pet owner — especially owners of French Bulldogs or other brachycephalic breeds. The exclusions and denials make the policy effectively useless when you need it most.

Healthy Paws is the BEST

We love healthy paws and have been with them for almost 5 years now. All 3 of our dogs are insured through them. They are excellent to work with and reimbursements are quick and easy. We will never go without pet insurance and always recommend healthy paws to anyone that asks!!
