Every Claim Denied
I adopted a four month old kitten from a local shelter. I took her to the vet prior to my Pets Best policy taking effect. What a mistake!!! Since that initial health exam every claim I have submitted has been denied due to pre-existing conditions. I guess I should have taken her to the vet pre-adoption for a check up and returned her if she did not have a clean bill of health. Maybe I should have had her evaluated in momma's womb. Pets Best at one time was good insurance, however since being taken over by Aetna all they want is to collect your premium and deny legitimate claims.

Excuses for Everything
I have a little pomeranian puppy who has an open fontanel. The Trupanion representative said that it didnt matter and that he would be covered by the pet insurance. He also developed bronchitus a few days after signing up for the insurance. The doctors original checkup notes stated that his eyes were watery. My little pomeranian started having siezures a few weeks later and has required a trip to the neurologist and a prescription of phenbarbital. Last week I submitted my claims to trupanion. The ones for the siezures and the ones for the bronchitus checkups. They will not cover any of the bills. They claim now that an open fontanel is a pre-condition for siezures and the watery eyes noted by the doctor indicated that bronchitus was develping and therefore also fell under the pre-existing condition category. They did however want to reimburse me for coccidia medication, even though their contract specificly states that they do not cover parasitic infectons. Im up to $2k in vet bills and up until this point had been sleeping a little easier thinking trupanion had me covered. But all they want to help me with is a $12 deworming medication after paying them $50 a month for coverage. My advice is DO NOT BOTHER WITH THEM! They are all about the business(playing lawyer) and have little interest in providing excellence in customer service to their policy holders.

ASPCA pet insurance is highly recommended.
Pet owner friends of mine recommended that I purchase ASPCA pet insurance on the same day I purchased my puppy. He seemed perfectly healthy, but of course unforeseen accidents occur - puppies eat plants they shouldn't , and many times over the 4 1/2 years I've had him, I've been grateful for the coverage.

Ear Infection Resolved
I had judged Trupanion in hast - Initially an ear infection was denied, but within 1 phone call it was resolved and they have agreed to cover the claim. Trupanion has always been very efficent and honest with me thus far. I regret losing my cool on the first claim they denied. However, they resolved the issue imediately. I can hoenstly say that I would recommend Trupanion to anyone with a cat or dog.

Made a bad situation better
I was grateful that I had an Embrace policy for our little rescued Boston terrier. She was diagnosed with a tumor near her ear drum and after surgery, suffered a life-threatening artery rupture requiring a stay in the veterinary hospital. I submitted my claims and Embrace immediately responded and sent a reimbursement check. Very impressive. They continued to follow up to make sure I had received the check and to inquire about the continuing recovery of my little friend.

I am so thankful we have ASPCA Pet Insurance.
Buffy, our shih tzu, was about three when we adopted her from her foster home. Within two months she required surgery to remove bladder stones and a corroded quarter swallowed sometime in her youth. We immediately decided we needed pet insurance! and are so thankful we chose to get it from ASPCA Pet Insurance. She has since needed life-saving surgery for a "telescoping intestine" and later treatment at Pet Emergency for a severe ear infection. We received fair and speedy reimbursement on each occasion after submitting our claim form. It's a relief to know that help is there if and when we need it for our beloved pet.

pre-existing conditions
I would just like people to know that when a policy renews, if the animal (in this case my cat) has had a problem in the prior policy year, it will be considered a pre-existing condition for the next policy year. My cat started to get sick in November 2010. An ER visit and several vet visits to try and find out what was wrong were reimbursed to the extent of the policy. However, wasn't until mid Dec they finally found the issue - a brain tumor. Unfortunately, my policy renewed on Dec 1, so the biggest expenses - the cardiopulmonary ultrasound, the CT scan, anesthesia, overnight hospital stay, etc. were not covered since it related to her prior condition in November. So watch when your animal gets sick and when your policy renews. Timing is everything and it certainly was in my case.
