READ MY EXPERIENCE BEFORE YOU BUY ASPCA INSURANCE

I bought the fancy Level 4 plan with a $7000 annual maximum. About $900/year.Plan period runs January 1-January 1. On December 14, my dog presented with severe anemia. The vet did some tests, with no causation, and sent me to a specialist who did additional tests-no causation. Her anemia is worsening. Now, at the very end of the year, the specialist recommends a bone marrow aspiration, at the cost of about $1200. It is scheduled for the following week, first week of January. It turns out she has an autoimmune disease, and now is being treated successfully. My $1200 claim is DENIED. Why? "Any illness that continues into the next plan period will not be covered". So, because my pet was unlucky enough to develop a life threatening condition only 2 weeks before her plan period ended, we only had two weeks to have this illness covered by the insurance. In our case, after that 2 weeks we still didn't even have a diagnosis! ASPCA denied me before they even knew what they weren't covering! So much for my fancy, expensive $7000 Level 4 plan. The plan automatically renews, the premiums automatically continue to be charged, but the care stops cold at the end of the plan period. I argued and they finally relented after many phone calls, and emails, and conversations with their customer service (BTW a nice guy, a credit to their company, only reason they deserve 1 star). In the end, in order to something back from the $1200 bone aspiration bill, I had to retroactively (12 months) pay premiums for a continuing care add-on, and pay an additional $100 deductible. Continuing Care only offers an additional $2500 in coverage. Did I mention that I had been paying for a $7000 coverage plan all along? What a deal. If you have ASPCA insurance, you better hope that if your pet becomes ill, it happens at the beginning of the plan period. We have no control of these things and this should not be a factor in an insurance plan. I am thinking that the few positive reviews that are out there are people who were lucky enough to have their pet's illness occur in the early months of their plan period, giving them time to go through the diagnostic process and treatment. Lucky you. We were at the other end. BE ADVISED! THIS COULD HAPPEN TO ANYONE. There is a reason why they are rated so poorly.. Don't waste your money, there are better plans out there.

Awesome

I have been using Trupanion since my dog was a pup 2 years ago. I have had to use Trupanion because Ziva needed surgery for torn cruciate ligaments bilateral hind legs. They were great for preapproval so I knew my cost before the surgery. I have been recommending Trupanion to people I meet when walking Ziva cause they ask what happened to my her due to her shaved legs.

HealthyPaws is truly the BEST!

I have nothing but fantastic things to say about HealthyPaws. We switched insurance companies to Healthy Paws a few years ago because we predicted that our boy, Maker- a big American Bulldog, may get hip dysplasia. Well, he doesn't have hip dysplasia but he had to undergo a major surgery (TPLO) on his right hind leg/knee. The journey began with visits to his vet, pain meds, a consultation with an ortho surgeon, then finally his surgery. The whole process is very time consuming, but Healthy Paws helped alleviate a lot of our stress! Sending in a claim is extremely easy and their turnaround time is unbelieveably quick compared to the previous insurance company we used. Not only did they process Maker's many claims so quickly, they even emailed to see how he was doing. Wonderful customer service like that during a time of stress helps so much. I constantly recommend Healthy Paws to others, and I am more than happy we have them by our side. Truly worth it!

What Happened

Trupanion was not very good with billing. They were supposed to bill me for payment on the 24th. All of a sudden, they started billing me whenever they wanted. I decided to cancel, they were not forthcoming with the cancellation. They even debited my card after I cancelled the service. I asked for my money back, I get this rude customer service person....I reported them to my bank. If I have to go through this for payment, I can just imagine what I have to go through for reimbursements. I will not use or recommend them to anyone.
