High hopes, but so far disappointed with Trupanion
I know that Trupanion has a very positive reputation, but there were a few things we weren't expecting as part of the enrollment process. The first was that the cost for our crossbreed dog is more expensive than either of the two breeds she is made up of combined. In fact, the cost is exactly the same as for a medium mixed breed dog, but she will actually be a small dog (under 20 pounds), so we couldn't figure out exactly why the cost was so much higher. I reached out to a customer representative at Trupanion to ask about this, and she explained that there are many factors that go into deciding the cost for each breed, including how many claims are filed for the breed. The crossbreed that our puppy is is still very new. I think there are probably very few people who have this dog breed with Trupanion insurance. So it seems odd that the cost would be based on such few examples of the breed, and I think it's more likely that the crossbreed of our dog is misclassified as a medium mixed breed. Another thing that was disappointing to us about the Trupanion process was that we did not know before we signed up that there was a 30 day waiting period for illnesses. We had been looking at the Trupanion website for weeks before actually signing up and requested a quote during that early time period. We are getting a new puppy, and we want to bring her to the vet soon after we get her, but now we feel as if we need to wait a bit longer before she goes, because we don't want her to be diagnosed with a condition at her first appointment and have it not be covered. If we had known about the 30 day waiting period, we would have signed her up earlier. I think it could be helpful if the information about this is more prevalent on Trupanion's website, and it might even be advantageous to send reminder emails to people who have submitted the form for a quote letting them know that signing up earlier is better. We compared Trupanion with a number of different pet insurance companies and chose it for it's strong coverage and reputation. We hope we will be happy with it, but these first impressions have made us less comfortable.

Embraces is the best pet insurance available.
My vet said that Embrace was probably the best pet insurance he has ever seen, and after being with Embrace for over two years now, I couldn't agree more. I take my dog to the vet for his annual checkup and then submit my receipt to Embrace for the Wellness plan and within 5-7 days, the money was in my bank account. This is the norm with these folks, as they truly get it right. I have both the Wellness plan and the regular insurance for accidents and illness, and again, they are simply wonderful. I would highly recommend this insurance, and it's reasonably priced!

I have liked Trupanion's service until last week when I submitted a claim for dental work. The reason 0% was covered was because notes from a vet visit two days before I started coverage with Trupanion said my dog showed signs of tartar buildup. It puts a real sour taste in your mouth when you are a diligent pet owner and your insurance company doesn't give back just a little of the $3,800+ you've paid them over the years to help cover the cost of a very expensive procedure. I used to think that Trupanion was personable and accommodating but this refusal of coverage came right after I found out that changing my address with Trupanion in August 2021 when I moved from Boston to Vermont would have saved me $10 a month in premiums and when I called, the rep said they couldn't prorate me even if I could prove the address change. I was understanding then but the back-to-back refusals make me realize that all insurance companies truly are all the same. We all know what we're getting when we sign up for insurance and in the end it'll hopefully be worth it. I just suppose that the high opinion I had for Trupanion is lost. But I do appreciate that it's always easy to get in touch with a live person so keep up the good work on that front.

I think you guys do a great job.
I think you guys do a great job. I just really dislike that examination fees are not covered even for a covered treatment. I work in insurance and I feel that is wrong. I also have seen an almost 100 percent increase in fees in the 7 years of my puppy's life.

Submitting claims is easy fast and painless.
Submitting claims is easy, fast and painless....my only wish is that Trupanion would cover more items when it is something the Veterinarian had requested you purchase for your dogs heath. My dog has severe allergies and cannot eat regular food but her food is not covered even though I have to buy it at the Vet's and is a speciality food. Other than that I love Trupanion.
