Excellent but costly

The coverage is amazing. My only complaint is that when I first purchased this insurance, I was told the premium would never increase due to age. However, the premium increases by a few dollars every single year. They say it's to keep up with costs of vet care in our area. My monthly premium started at under $60 back in 2015, and today we're at $75 only 4 years later. What I find odd is that my vet still charges the same as she did 4 years ago, so I'm not sure what vetcare cost increases they are trying to keep up with.

Highly Recommend

We have had Trupanion for 8 years for our dog and 6 years for our cat. Our premiums are $113/month and have gone up steadily every year (not unlike my own personal health care insurance). At the end of January, our cat became severely ill; losing weight, little appetite, lethargic, liver enzymes off the charts. Our local vet diagnosed it as acute pancreatitis, but once treatment was not proving helpful they referred us to a specialty vet. Sydney spent 5 days in critical care undergoing numerous lab tests, ultrasounds, a blood transfusion (very low RBC), a bone marrow biopsy, and came home on an e-tube for nutrition. He continued to lose weight with the e-tube, however. His e-tube became infected after about 5-6 weeks and it was removed since he was starting to eat on his own. He came home with us after that procedure & seemed more like his normal self, although he was still losing weight even though he was eating. Finally, on 3/30/19, his little body just couldn't take it any longer. I came home from work and he was limp, barely breathing and unresponsive. We rushed him back to the vet who made the recommendation that we euthanize. His BP was 47, his weight was down to 2.1 kg, he was dehydrated, and his RBC was very low. We made the difficult decision, but the only humane one for him (he was only 6 years old). Trupanion was there with us from the beginning. No, they don't pay exam fees (even emergency or hospital exam fees), but once we met our $100 deductible, they paid 90% of all his outstanding bills, including special food for his tube. All the vet bills totaled close to $20K and we never could have done it without the insurance. Sydney's share of the $113/month premium is $37. Even if we had stuck $100/month away for vet bills for the past six years, we would not have even come close to being able to afford his care. So I get people's frustrations with the premiums and disputes over pre-existing conditions, etc., but when something catastrophic happens, it pays to have insurance. You hope you never need it (kind of like ourselves), but you're thankful to have it when you need it. Trupanion has been very kind since Sydney's passing. They already refunded his portion of his premium for April and we have received several emails from them expressing their sympathy. I'll recommend them everytime!

Feline Dental Surgery

My kitty needed extensive dental surgery. Thankfully he is doing much better now. He was losing so much weight and couldn’t eat before the surgery that I feared for his life. He hadn’t been purring for quite a while and his energy was low. The first 10 days after surgery he had a lot of discomfort and I was concerned that the surgery wasn’t a success but on the 11th day he was back to normal. He’s doing fine now and I am so relieved! I am grateful that Healthy Paws covered his surgery. If I had paid the entire bill out of pocket it would’ve caused me financial stress.

Very informative on claim response.

Glad to have pet insurance through a reputable company such as Nationwide. So far since we have had the insurance I feel that the company has been fair in paying claims.

Did the right thing

My dog was diagnosed w Addison's disease last year n they were extremely supportive n understanding thru the process and really did the right thing throughout. The only complaint I have is how much (about 30%) they raised my premium from last year to this year. Their website claims average premium is about $40-$60 and mine is above that and my dog is only 7.

Great, easy to use insurance service

Having never had pet insurance before, I compared a lot of companies before deciding on ASPCA's plan. My comparisons showed that it was the best value for the premium cost. I just filed my first claim and it could not have been easier. The online process was easy to do and tracking the progress of the the claim was a cinch. The amount they paid was exactly as spelled out in the policy. I phoned customer service to ask a question about whether I should sign up for direct deposit for the claim payment, and even though it was too late to do it on this particular claim, the customer agent did all the set up for me online so that I didn't have to log back on to the website and do it myself. She was friendly and efficient.

Next to no coverage

This company find all the excuses to not pay out. Our 2 year old Boston terrier had hot spot on his tail for which he was treated a few weeks ago. We’ve been with this company for last 20+ months or so. So we file a claim and they paid big fat $0 sighting that we did not get the policy prior to treatment. For a condition that developed only a few weeks ago?? And there were other occasions prior to this where they wouldn’t pay a cent. I got so fed up with them not paying for anything I cancelled our coverage. Definitely not worth $70+ a month premium. Save your money!! Put your money into your savings account or buy another (better) insurance.

Love the piece of mind having our insurance with you gives.

This is the first time we have had insurance on one of our pets. We have found the claim process to be very easy and the cost of the insurance affordable. The piece of mind that comes with having insurance is comforting. I have nothing but good things to say about your company.
