Former customer with really bad recent experiences

We had Healthy Paws since we adopted our dog almost 10 years ago. However, I got a recent notice via email that our premium would be increasing from $82 to over $400 dollars. All the documentation and notices in the online portal didn't adequately explain why, and none of the documents except the original email even mentioned the new amount, which was way at the bottom in basically the tiniest text possible. Extremely hard to cancel via email. I received three emails that acknowledged that my request had been received, but no real reply until I followed up with stronger wording, after which I was given the runaround again. Eventually I was able to get a (very nice) representative on the phone and canceled that way, but wow. I really think Healthy Paws has gone steeply downhill in the last couple of years and shifted to misleading practices that gave this longtime customer a horrible impression of them in the end.

Read Your Policy Carefully!

I learned that once you ever have a claim and you lower your reimbursement % and raise your deductible amount you can't change it back. AND, this next thing I'm going to describe is the reason I canceled one of my dog's policy. I read an EOB closely and discovered the reimbursement % is taken off DURING the deductible period. Yes. If you have a $1000 deductible with a 50% reimbursement and file a $1000 claim, it goes like this: $1000 - 50%=$500.00 towards deductible, not $1000. If you thought the DEDUCTIBLE was fulfilled, YOU'RE WRONG. In this scenario, you will have to file $1500 in claims to fulfill a $1000 deductible. If you have a $250 deductible with a 80% reimbursement and file a $250 claim, it looks like this: $250 - 20% =$200.00 towards deductible. That's right! Your reimbursement % is calculated DURING your deductible period. BUYER BEWARE!

Premium Rates are criminal for senior animals

I've been with Healthy Paws for 10 years, insuring my 2 dogs since they were puppies. Generally had a good experience, the claims process is pretty easy. However, now that they switched underwriters (2024/25) the rates have skyrocketed, and if you have a senior dog (10+) they will force you to increase your deductible, while your monthly premium will more than double. They don't want to insure senior pets, who need it the most, so they force you out financially. My healthy 10 year old dogs rate went from $90/month to $190/month and deductible from $750 to $1000, (which is really hard to reach). Check out the reddit thread about them and I promise you will want to look elsewhere. I suggest you do your research and find another pet insurer who actually cares about your pets for their ENTIRE lifetime.

Healthy Paws Raised My Premium 300%

I’ve had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance since 2016 for my two cats, now ages 11 and 12. In July 2025, they notified me that I was receiving a 300% premium increase—from $86 to $257/month—despite minimal claims (not a single one paid out) and no chronic health issues at the time of the notification. When asked, Healthy Paws refused to explain how the increase was calculated, ignored their own rate filing, and later reduced my coverage from 80% reimbursement and $500 deductible to 60%/$1,000 without warning or approval. Very misleading and unfair for a plan advertised as covering pets for life. I have filed a complaint with the Department of Insurance and cancelled my plan. Save yourself the money - don't count on this plan to cover your aging pets.

HP pricing you out when your dog gets older.

I have had this insurance company for my 12 year old dog since she was 10 months old. I have had no claims or missed payments(132 of them). My payments were $69/month, then $139/month and this month $373!. Beware when you will probably need the insurance they are going to price you out of keeping it. It's cheaper to pay yourself since I'm sure they won't pay the whole bill anyway.

Monthly Cost

$15 – $80, depending on breed, zip code, age of pet and choice of deductible and co-pay.

Coverage

One plan covers accidents, illnesses, cancer, emergency care, genetic conditions, alternative care and more. You can choose a co-pay of 10%, 20%, 30% or 40%. The pay-out amount is based on your actual vet bill.

Payout Limits

No per incident, annual or lifetime pay-out limit.

Deductible

You can choose an annual deductible of $250, $500 or $750* *Choice depends on age of the pet

Age Limits

Pets must be at least 8 weeks old and under 14 years old at time of enrollment. Once enrolled, pets can stay insured regardless of age.

Waiting Period

Coverage begins 15 days after your policy starts. There is a 12-month waiting period for hip dysplasia claims.

Exclusions

Pre-existing conditions are not covered. Hereditary and congenital conditions are covered, however hip dysplasia is only covered in pets who enroll before they are 6 years old.
