How to Save Money at Cawthorpe Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If you're looking for a good veterinarian who is fair to his clients, don't go there! After the change of ownership, this clinic is ashamed of the way it works. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, my dog takes a drug to control his cough. It's two 2.5 mg pills a day. His pills ran out and my wife called the clinic asking for 3 pills for 2 days until they were ready at the pharmacy. I'm going to pay $120 for 120 pills!!! Shame on them!!! They charged $38 for the 3 pills which cost $1.04/each at the pharmacy!!! I stopped buying from him because of the absurd price and buy at the pharmacy for 25% of what he charged! My dog is 13 years old and thank God he has no problems, just annual vaccinations. Otherwise, I would have gone to another clinic! Shame on the greed of these new owners.

Clinic changed ownership recently. New owners don't know what they are doing. The workers and employees are really sweet. Michael especially has been a big help, but it would have been nice to know that my pet would be seen by a new doctor.

Well the vet examining my cat did an amazing job obtaining the Rabies test blood sample without stressing my cat but wasn't fully aware of the requirements for sending my cat to Australia. That issue was resolved by an easy phone call.

All the reviews about price gouging are correct. Money scam. They will refuse to tell you prices over the phone to get you in to over charge you once you've already paid the exam fee. Edit: And as you can see by the owners reply, they agree and are even trying to frame the situation in a better light for themselves. For context I asked the price for specific medication and medical procedures, something that LITERALLY EVERY OTHER VET IN MISSISSAUGA was happy to share. I in no way asked for medical advice from the receptionist.

Figure it Out

I've trusted this specific vet 2 times in 2 years and the second time I realized the only reason I went back again was because they were conveniently close to my house on a Saturday morning. Honestly right off the bat this place ONLY hired the main vet to bring in profit. That is exactly what his job is. I don't think he's there to sympathize or even listen to what we tell him about our pets. He assumes that we don't know our animals and try's to convince us it's something else for more money! The first time I spent a few hundred and nothing was resolved. It's more about the vaccine and rabbi shots and blah blah. Never about addressing the root cause of how our pets are feeling and on my second time same exact thing. $260 in and out in 30 minutes he prescribed a medication which were for dogs that just had surgery (I googled the name). He gave my dog some other things and nothing was to benefit his stomach (besides probiotic) which was the real reason I went. He's throwing up his food, his lungs don't sound good and he's still the same way 1 week after spending all that money! I honestly think the secretary lady at the office cares more about the animals than the Dr. Of course she just listens to what he tells her and that's how their business operates!
