How to Save Money at Bagnell Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The entire team at Bagnell Veterinary Clinic is absolutely wonderful. I’ve been taking my dog there for 13 years and have always received exemplary care. Dr. Bagnell has built an amazing team of dedicated, efficient, sympathetic and animal-loving professionals. Thank you all for your ongoing care and support of Princess (and me!)!

This review took me almost 2 years to write, and 6+ years ago I would have rated it 5 stars. I have just been putting it off but I really need to get it off my chest. I am not writing a review of the entire place, only 1 star for a particular doctor. I don't know if she still works there. The place itself is GREAT, albeit a bit expensive. The staff including Dr. Wayne (who I saw only on my first visit) are 5 STAR. BUT... There was a female vet at the time, about 7 years ago, I am not sure if it the same one as currently in the website photo.. the photo doesn't look familiar. and my SINCEREST apologies for her sake if it is not her. Anyway, my cat was having a bit of problem with some reguritation. Not every day, just maybe once or twice a week. I was advised extra bloodwork which was $220 and I said that was really expensive and I can't really afford it, on top of the already expensive visit, but I did it. Then I realize when I was leaving and charged almost $500, that she charged me an extra $100 for her drawing the blood. Lack of transparency right there. When those results came back, I went in and was charged full price for a follow up visit, upon which she just told me that the tests didn't show anything, and so I could either have x-rays and ultrasounds which would cost almost $1000 and even if they showed anything wrong, that surgery on a trachea would be dangerous, therefore she instructed that he likely had megaesophogus, which she personally had never seen in a cat but it is not unheard of, and that I immediately put him on a 100% liquid diet fed vertically. "or he will die" were her exact words. To my knowledge there was no consultation with another doctor to verify this conclusion. This was a huge transition, for a cat that has only been on kibble for 5 years of his life, and a huge inconvenience since we couldn't even leave him alone in the house more than a few hours because we couldn't leave liquid food out. To this day, I feel guilty having put him through that. So, 5 years pass.. we did an x-ray for a different reason, and guess what. Trachea was absolutely fine. I did not appreciate the non-transparency of pricing, no consult for a second opinion that was only an assumption, and besides, an x-ray alone cost me less than $100 at the other (my new) vet. He is back on kibble now, (doesn't like soft food anymore) 11 years old and totally healthy. Again, my apologies if that vet is no longer there because the rest of the staff is great. (It is expensive there though)

We have been taking our dogs to Bagnell Vet for over 10 years now. Every one of the staff and doctors is very caring to all animals and very attentive and compassionate. I also take my dog to get groomed by Ian. Ian does a fabulous job with grooming my dog. He takes care and attention to ensure that my dog is safe and comfortable during the entire grooming process. Overall, we love this veterinary hospital and groomer!

Dr. B and Shelley and the rest of the staff are so caring about the animals. They treated my dog like she was their own and called afterwards tp see how she was doing. Everyone is so nice. Highly recommend. You're not going to find a better veterinarian clinic.
