How to Save Money at Mountainside 24/7 Animal Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This was my first time visiting an emergency clinic. My poor 15 year old pup was attacked by a raccoon last night as well as being pushed into the pool by it. The staff were excellent and had me in a room within 30 mins. The Vet tech (can't remember her name) and Dr. Jordie Schnarr were excellent and so caring, the Dr went over everything thoroughly and only sent home what was necessary. Very happy with their service and their kindness toward my old lady, thank you!

We were very impressed with the level of care, communication, and competence demonstrated by all staff & the several vets we met with over a stressful weekend! Our dog Wesley ingested a mystery rubber object and was not eating, vomiting and lethargic. Thankfully, he did not need surgery, but we were grateful for the thorough care he received. Fees were less than the estimate and the transparency around costs and treatment options was excellent.

We are so grateful to the team at Mountainside for taking exceptional care of our 9 year old boxer/bulldog who became very ill after eating part of a rubber toy and eventually went into kidney failure. The team was responsive, compassionate and thorough. They promptly and professionally answered our many questions and concerns, were accommodating to all our requests including requests to visit him while he was in the hospital (and were especially accommodating and kind to me as I was 9 months pregnant) and were so dedicated to ensuring he made a safe and speedy recovery. They treated him like part of our family, not just a pet, and we would have no reservations referring anyone in an emergency situation to their clinic. Thank you again to the exceptional team at Mountainside - we appreciate what you do so much!

The overall rating for this place is NOT reflective of how stellar the service here. The ratings are from prior mangement and sadly carrying over since they haven’t changed their name. The entire team, from receptionist to RN to the vet who treated my dog were absolutely amazing. I came in for an urgent but not life threatening issue and Dr.Reid Palmer handled every step so meticulously while explaining the rationale to everything he did. My dog is usually extremely anxious at vets and somehow within 10mins, my dog let Dr.Palmer fully handle him and was relatively calm while being examined which is the FIRST time thats happened. The only negative thing is that I don’t live in Vancouver, orelse I would have switched to this vet clinic immediately and for good. Thank you for taking such great care of me and my pet today!

I was very nervous when I thought my cat swallowed some duct tape and Karina was incredibly helpful and wonderful. When I phoned to consult her it felt like she truly had my cats’ best interest at heart and wasn’t just trying to get money out of me. Karina was willing and comforting with providing next steps and information without judgment. I would recommend this facility to anyone I know and will be taking my cats here if needed in the future.
