Amazing Service
Amazingly quick turnaround time on claims. Easy to talk to claims reps. Best pet insurance company I have ever dealt with.

Despite having a healthy dog with no preexisting health issues my policy went up from $35 a month to over $80 a month in the span of three years. There was no explanation given to me about the cost increase except that I live in a major city (nothing to do with my dog in particular). Company clearly states that it will not increase premiums based on pets birthday and yet that’s exactly what they did. I felt very manipulated and canceled the policy.

Pets Best is horrible. When I bought the insurance I had no idea my dog was going to injure his cruciate. In the plan, it won't cover cruciate injuries for six months after purchasing the insurance. I understand that due to dogs blowing cruciates and people buying insurance to cover it. However, he DID blow the second one after the six-month waiting period, and Best Pets denied the claim stating it was a pre-existing condition. He had NOT blown EITHER cruciate at the time I purchased the insurance and thus, the condition was NOT pre-existing. He blew the first one five months into the plan. I could have waited and filed a claim after the six-month waiting period but it wouldn't have been fair to the dog. To make matters worse, they RAISED MY RATES without notification. They raised it by ten dollars. Some insurances would have covered both cruciates and if not the first, the last. The customer service got a 3 because they answered the phone and the person on the other end was pleasant. They got a 2 on the ease of filing a claim because my vet sent in my pet's records 3 times and Pets Best said they never received it. I had to go and upload all the records myself. It was frustrating. I should have done better research because others have had the same problem with raising the rates and filing claims. Others have experienced long, drug-out claims reimbursement. I will research other insurances for my new puppy and switch my other dog.

Excellent customer service
Thank you Trupanion! You’ve made setting up the plans for my 2 min pin puppies a breeze. Your customer service is EXCELLENT. A rarity these days. The young woman who helped me by phone this evening went out of her way making sure I understood everything about the policies and how the payments would work. And she was so personable and understanding I felt like an old friend was helping me not just a customer service rep. If I could I’d rate my experience 10 stars instead of 5. If anyone considering Trupanion is on the fence about it I feel you can’t go wrong with this company. Just do it…..your pet deserves it.

The claims are processed quickly, but many things are not covered. It is affordable, but ultimately not great if you're looking for a broad net of coverage. Also, there is a 14 day probation period when you first sign up, so do not schedule a vet appointment during this time... they'll say any findings were "pre-existing".

Getting ripped off and not happy
I have two dogs that are approximately 10 years old. Up until now they're premiums were about $10 apart. But I guess because I file a lot of claims on one of my dogs even though I've never reached the $5,000 maximum payout Pet's best decided that they would just practically double my premium without providing me an adequate explanation and you can't get anybody on the phone to explain it either. I think they're trying to make up for the fact that I do have claims paid even though they never exceed $2,000 for the year. so now my policy went from 1000 a year to 1800 a year. Meanwhile my male dog similar in age and hardly any claims, his premium stays the same. I think they're trying to get money back from claims that they paid and they're not providing and explanation. I'm considering following a complaint to the attorney general for unfair business practice.

It seemed like it was a good insurance policy but as I took my dogs to the vet whenever I submitted claims they were nickel and diming items on the claim. It was more like they were busy finding reasons not to cover than to do what is right by the claimant. They refer to their wellness plan and when I got that again I was nickel and dimed. After two years they asked for one of my dog’s medical history prior to the policy continuing. The dog had no issues. The company seems to be interested in getting premiums but not paying out. I switched to spot insurance instead. They were less and covered more. After they replied: Again 2 years then they ask for a medical record when it should have been requested when the policy began 2 years ago. And as now everyone sees, thank god HIPPAA isn’t for animals they fine line, nickel and dime. Loving my new pet insurance. Update after reply: Again read their reply, does it sound like a company that has your or your family member’s back? I am glad my personal medical coverage isn’t this way. Their response proves my point exactly and this is how they provide service to you. Unless you are an attorney don’t bother. Spot is the way to go.

Not worth the money and inconvenience…
So so far it seems the review of claims is taking longer than a week. Also requesta for additional information on claims are inconsistent. I had two claims going, one for each of my pets who both got the exact same annual wellness exam both had itemized receipt. But one was reviewed asking for a document that was had more clear about amount. Last so far the amount reimbursed for wellness items are well under what paid only about 55 % of the total. So basically I would have saved money if I just paid out of pocket. But now I have to pay my premium and pay the difference with will end up totalled to more per year. I will not be renewing service next year.
