Abysmal
Overall, I am extremely unhappy with MetLife Pet Insurance policies and service. The only reason I have stayed on this insurance plan is because if I switch to another provider anything that is currently covered under MetLife policy will be considered pre-existing under a new plan. The insurance model feels like this company exists only for profit without any regard for the wellbeing of people's pets. I am specifically frustrated that my dog's eye condition (pannus) is not covered. Months prior to her diagnosis, I scheduled her for a vet appointment to treat a bite mark and eye redness in one eye. At this appointment, I arbitrarily said the issue started "a couple weeks ago" after playing with another dog - I had waited until the policy started to schedule this appointment because this was our first time at a vet being insured. During this appointment, they could not determine why my dog's eye was irritated, other than speculating that it was a play injury. She was also treated for a bite at this appointment. Within a week of this appointment, the eye redness went away without treatment. While at first covered, MetLife later retracted coverage after my dog saw a specialist for eye redness in both eyes (months later), citing the initial appointment as proof that the issue began before policy coverage. I appealed the decision, got a doctor from the clinic of the first appointment to sign off that there was no evidence that the issue treated during that first appointment was chronic or pre-existing, nor necessarily related to the chronic condition my dog later developed well into the policy. My appeal was rejected, though I never received a letter in the mail and now it is far too late to re-appeal. Now, nothing related to her eye condition is covered, while I still pay over $100/month for her pet insurance. Because of this, I cannot afford to treat her eye condition and she may suffer permanent eye damage. I feel like we were completely taken advantage of, and roped into a pet insurance plan that is not best for us. More recently, I called customer service with an estimate to have a small lump on my dog's side biopsied. Based on MetLife policy, the customer service representative cannot even say definitively whether or not this biopsy will be covered, despite it being years into my policy. While I don't blame the representative, it is extremely frustrating that it is the plain policy of MetLife Pet Insurance to never give pre-approvals for coverage. In this same call, I requested some information on yearly rates and how they expect them to change from year to year - the representative could provide no information on this either. In addition to these problems, in my experience MetLife takes far longer than their 5-10 guarantee to process claims, doesn't update their system properly (my claims from the eye issues still say "processing"), and the system is glitchy and slow. I strongly advise against choosing MetLife to insure your pets - they are sharks that have backwards priorities, despite what their representatives tell you.

Everyone should look into Metlife Pet Insurance
I've been overall very pleased with Metlife pet insurance. I have peace of mind knowing my babies will get the care they need without breaking the bank. The reimbursement process is easy. I get reimbursed before my credit card bill is even due. The only thing I was bummed about was that Metlife declined my great danes' preventative gastropexy surgery. My vet recommended the surgery and I'm glad we got it even though we had to pay out of pocket. I'd still recommend Metlife to everyone. You can customize the plan to meet your pets needs!!

It's great until it's not
For context, I have been grandfathered in with a 100% reimbursement policy, which is something a lot of places don't offer anymore. So, I stick with Metlife. Metlife's main flaws are really just two factors. One, the turn around time for a claim is, on average, longer than other pet insurance companies. Usually 7-10 business days. I also noticed that the bigger the claim, the longer it takes to pay out. Two, is that you kind of have to babysit them. Mulitple times I have had emails sent to me in error from them (saying I am missing documentation), claims only paid out partially (it was over 4k of a vet visit and at first they only paid 2k, ignoring the second day of invoices entirely), and I also was billed twice at one point? The good news is, the customer service staff is really kind. Any problem I encounter, they fix it. EZ PZ. But it is frustrating that it happens to begin with. It feels like their automated system has flaws but I can't be sure the root of the problem. I'll continue to stay with them as they've always been able to make things work for me but be aware that you may have to keep on eye on things.

Easy Claim submission and great Customer Service
We have used Healthy Paws for over 8 years. We rescued a 7 yr old Boston and at that point NYS law allowed for senior coverage through Healthy Paws and it was so helpful. Sadly at age 11 he got prostate cancer and Healthy Paws made it so easy to submit claims and the reimbursements were so quick. I never had to worry about coverage bc it was very clear on what was and wasn't covered after the deductible. All his oncologist visits and chemo meds were all covered. And when it was time to transition him, Healthy Paws was supportive and the cost was covered under the policy. We even got a condolence card from them after George passed. Now with our second dog Ellie, she was rescued at 1 yrs old and we also got her coverage from Healthy Paws. The premium did go up as expected, year after year, however again, I had peace of mind that after the deductible, she would have coverage--she had an eye issue, two different surgeries to biopsy a growth on top of her skin and then the recent procedure was a lumpectomy, which thankfully turned out to be benign. I never had to worry about coverage. Healthy Paws was prompt and clear. I have recommended it to all the new pet owners I know. Unfortunately as noted above, HealthyPaws does not cover new seniors and so our most recent rescue was 5 years old when we got her and I was disappointed that I couldn't add her to Healthy Paws, I had to go to a competitor. I will not name names, but the first year of coverage with the other insurance carrier was terrible. It took almost 3 months for an EOB...subsequently it's gotten better but I had high expectations since I started with HEalthy Paws.
