Premium Costs Have Increased Significantly

Submitting Claims with Healthy Paws has been easy to do when I need to. I have a concern with how they significantly increase their premiums every year though. We have been using Healthy Paws since 2015 when we adopted our kitty. He was 7 years old then. Every year, the insurance premium slightly increased up until last year when the premium almost doubled in price. We just received a notification for the premium adjustment for 2021, and the cost is almost doubling again. It seems that now that my kitty is in his senior years and had a few more appointments, they are adjusting the price to the point where we possibly should consider moving to another insurance company. I want to let others who are looking at this insurance as this is not covered if any of the insurance ranking web sites. You will find other customers who are posting this same complaint also.. I currently have a $250 deductible with 90% coverage. Below are some numbers for reference. 2015 = $29.35 / month 2016 = $30.77 / month 2017 = $33.45 / month 2018 = $37.61 / month 2019 = $43.98 / month 2020 = $83.02 / month 2021 = $157.40 /month (renews in 2 months) When I called Healthy Paws last year about the significant premium price jump, I was told then this was due to the number of people filing claims in my area so they have to adjust the premium costs. Before I moved to Healthy Paws (based on their good reviews), I had a VPI/Nationwide plan and the premiums never adjusted this significantly. Since I started paying in 2015, I have paid $3040.14 in premium costs. Unless I adjust my coverage for 2021, I will pay $1,888 in premium costs just for 2021. There was a class action suite that was flied about this practice, but the judge dismissed the case it seems in favor of Healthy Paws.

Wonderful Customer Service

I am very satisfied with Healthy Paws. I purchased the insurance policy ($100 deduct, 90% coverage, around $20-25/mo) for a kitten that we had rescued. Shortly after, she had blood in her urine. Her vet treated her for a UTI. She continued to have problems, so a x-ray was performed. She was diagnosed with a large urinary stone requiring surgery. I uploaded her itemized bill via mobile app to Healthy Paws. Very easy process. I was reimbursed (minus $55 vet fee, $100 deduct, and 10% copay) within a week. She was put on a prescription diet (no coverage by insurance). A couple years went by, and she just had another surgery for the same problem. Again, a $1000 surgery was reimbursed and my copay and out of pocket was around $250! Thank you Health Paws!

Trupanion was a godsend for me because my dog happened to get an injury that went over my deductible and saved me thousands of dollars.

Trupanion was a godsend for me, because my dog happened to get an injury that went over my deductible and saved me thousands of dollars. The company has been great about payments and has never felt like it was "just a business." The only reason I did not give it a 10 is because it may not be the right choice for people who prefer an insurance company that will contribute to regular vet visit costs. However, I think it is because of this aspect of Trupanion that the premiums cost less. The whole thing feels appropriate, for lack of a better term. You pay a bit less per month, and you get coverage under fewer circumstances, but when you ARE covered, you get exactly what insurance is meant to be: relief from a major financial burden when something goes unexpectedly wrong.

Trupanion, thank you for your help!!!

Skipper is my best friend, not just a dog, (an expression I've always found offensive), and has been a blessed addition to my life. In the last year, he has been experiencing problems with his liver, has undergone numerous tests, some rather invasive, and the experience has been a difficult one for both of us. He is now taking 3 medications daily, and there has been some improvement, but still a long ways to go until the danger of liver failure and a significantly shorter life span, as well as, but not less serious than, the risk of other complications, has been reduced sufficiently. To say the least, I am thankful I opted for pet insurance when I brought Skipper home as a puppy, and have remained with Trupanion for the last 7yrs, and will continue to do so. The financial assistance from having pet insurance helped in the past with dental issues, and is proving to be invaluable during recent events. Trupanion has been wonderful to deal with so far, and this means Skipper and I can continue to focus on improving his health, knowing there will be help and support every step of the way. Thank you to Trupanion, and here's hoping Skipper and I will have many more years together!!!

Very disappointed.

Extremely disappointed in this company. I have had policies on two of my dogs for the last year and never submitted a claim. Tha. t means that I paid out close to $1000, Today I received an Email informing me that my policies were going up $38/mo. When I called I was told that it was because other policy holders had put in more claims than anticipated. I don't think so! I will be changing companies.

Rates rise astronomically every year!

I live in New England, in the Boston area. I understand that it is an expensive place to live, but there are a LOT of dogs. My premium has gone up $80 in the last 2 years. Every May, it's been going up an average of $20–30. What they tell you is that, sure, they will never raise premiums because you use the insurance, but they raise it like hell if other people use it. I have been paying into Healthy Paws for 7 years, my adopted dog is 10 years old, so will be virtually ineligible at other insurance companies. I am hoping to retire soon; trying to afford over $100/month for my dog after paying in for so many years is scaring me to death.

False advertising and dishonest.

I purchased insurance for our dog & our daughters dog. When it came time to actually use the insurance in both cases after weeks of processing we were told that both dogs had pre existing conditions which was not true. In both cases they paid out very little if anything for our claims. I / we find them very dishonest to deal with. Will never buy insurance from them again. Buyer beware !
