Trupanion claims
I realize this is just for catastrophic illness/injury, but I wonder if it was the smart thing to even pick up this insurance. I would not recommend it.

Trupanion review.
Trupanion has always been wonderful to work with. Although more expensive than some other carriers, they are compassionate and have always been available and kind when I needed them. Would highly recommend them.

Adjustable rate insurance priced me out
I insured my two cats in 2017 at $61.64. In the life of my policy, I filed 1 claim and was paid out when one cat was put down in 2019. The claim process was quick and easy, and the payout was within 2 weeks. I have not tested this process since then. My other cat has a history of allergies that was never covered and takes prescription cat food for kidney stones. My issue is with annual price increases. The premium for my remaing cat has increased from $33.76 in 2017 to $64.35 in 2020, $96.52 in 2021 and $362.23 in 2022. She is a bengal and 16 years old but more than tripling the premium has forced me to cancel the policy. I have since adopted other pets and gone with other insurance companies that were referred by my veterinarian and other pet owners with years of experience with other insurers and older pets.

So glad I had insurance!
I'm a believer in insurance, rebates, and being prepared. My hope is always if I buy safeguards, I won't ever need them. I got insurance for Enzo, a now 16 mos old Bernedoodle, when he was 8 weeks old. He's never been a chewer, a barker, a biter and doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body. But after he was fixed at 15 mos old (and fully vaccinated) we let him go to doggy daycare at a highly regarded facility in Huntington Beach. And it was there that my fully vaccinated pup got Bordetella. But it wasn't diagnosed until weeks of x-rays, ultrasounds, multiple blood tests, fecal tests and more. At my vets and at a specialty hospital. All the while, I thought my pup was going to die. He was feverish, depressed (it's really a thing!), lethargic, and lost more than 10% of his body weight. He was dehydrated and had to have an under-skin balloon of water placed to strategically release water to keep him alive. This went on for a month. When all was told and done (and Enzo thankfully survived, thanks to the hard work of Brookfield Pet Hospital in Fountain Valley, Ca), my bills were in excess of $6,000. I didn't have that kind of money, so I charged it. And then I crossed my fingers and sent everything to Healthy Paws. Scanning and emailing the info proved faster than faxing or mailing it. When you file a first claim, you must submit all medical records from inception of the puppies life until the present so they have a full picture of his care. Luckily, most vets can forward this information with detail billings, xrays, and analyses on your behalf. You just need to fill out and send a simple one page claim form. Healthy Paws was fantastic. They responded as soon as my packet was received to let me know they were looking at it. though I sent them 14 months worth of records, nothing was disputed. The checks started arriving within a week of filing the claims, in time to pay my charge card bills. My particular policy had an annual $250 deductible, didn't cover exam fees (an insignificant part of any bill) and then they paid 90% of the claim amount. I received more money back then I had paid in insurance premiums, substantially more money. Never once did they questions the services or second-guess the procedures followed. Once Enzo was well and was back home, they actually wrote to see how he was doing. Have you ever had an insurance company do that for you? Healthy Paws was researched by me before signing up with them and the substantial comments all raved about Healthy Paws. I definitely made the right choice, and was able to concentrate on my pup's recovery without having to deal with the stress many insurance providers would have caused. If you're looking for insurance (and you should be), Healthy Paws is the one for you.
