Review

I have to say that your turn around for paying claims is by far the best I have ever experienced. My only complaints are (1) you (meaning your customers) should be able to change their "Pay" date. You should not have them be trapped on a payment date based on the day of the month that someone signed up with you. Example. When I first inquired and submitted coverage for all my pets it was the middle of the month, however when your Co FINALLY accepted my pets as their insurance co and the policy was started, it ended up being a couple of days towards the end of the month. Now I am constantly having to scramble because you auto draw from my account and subsequently ALWAYS leave me short for my RENT. (2) Your customer service dept not only said they could in no way help me change that date, but the best they could do is give me a PO Box address to mail in a complaint. I have to say that I dont feel that they really want to help your customers. Maybe you could look into this and change this silly policy. thanks

Pickles blew his ACL equivalent.

Pickles blew his ACL equivalent. The claim was accepted and paid quickly without question. My only negative would be I thought my policy covered prescription food and physio so I did end up paying more than I expected. I'm still not complaining though.

Astronomical rate increase on renewal

I had two policies with Hartville. After the first year both policies automatically renewed with much higher premiums. The increases were over 36% on one and 53% on the other. I received no notice of the increase, only a single email saying the policies were up for renewal. The increases were only visible by going to the website, logging in and viewing the policy. Hartville claimed they made calls prior to renewal to notify me of the increase but when pressed they admitted that they used an automated system that didn't actually connect when it supposedly called.

I can't believe they can get away with this!

I have a service dog. I am very conscientious about her care because I am dependent on her for my independence. My vet has been offering a package deal where she gets her yearly check-up, blood, stool and urine tests, etc. for 1 discounted price. The last 2 tests showed a slight elevation in 1 of 2 kidney values (The first showed the slight elevation in 1, the 2nd showed a slight elevation in the other while the first went down). My vet told me about it and has been watching those values carefully "just in case". He stated several times, "she does not have kidney disease", because I was all concerned. I asked what I could do to help prevent it and he suggested a prescription diet, "however, she does not have kidney disease!". I decided that if something would happen, I should get insurance for her before it became a pre-existing condition. I called Nationwide, agreed to pay for her rx diet, her allergy pills, and her supplements. Then I sent in my first claim. it took 8 MONTHS to hear back from them (other than several notes saying they needed another 30 days to make a determination). After paying them for 8 months, they determined that besides the things we discussed, they also were not going to pay for anything kidney related because of those slightly elevated blood tests, and they also were not going to pay for anything for her ears because she had "itchy ears". Duh people, that's why she takes allergy pills in the spring through fall, and I already agreed to pay for her pills, but that was not enough apparently. She hasn't been seen for her ears for a long time now. Talk about searching for ANYTHING they can find so they can determine a pre-existing condition!! 2 different vets were very surprised to find that Nationwide had denied kidney problems as a pre-existing condition because, "she does not HAVE kidney disease!" I searched for a way to appeal that decision, but there was nothing in the paperwork even saying there is a way to appeal. Next month, I have to sign up for another year, and believe it or not, they are raising their prices approximately $57 a month!! I've decided to just put that money into a separate savings account for her to pay for her vet bills instead of depending on Nationwide. Because I believe that if she does get sick, they will find a way to disqualify it as a pre-existing condition if they have to take a full year to do it!

Unreasonable Price Increases

The claims process has always been very good. We had to downgrade our coverage because the rate increased very unreasonably; approximately 52% increase in one year. You say the premium doesn’t increase based on claims we make, but that isn’t entirely true. Part of the increase is due to the cost of claims as a collective among all policy holders so essentially premiums do increase based on claims and my claims are a contributor to that. I expect some increases in premiums over time but I also expect them to be reasonable.

Extremely Satisfied So Far

We switched from another insurance provider, and I'm really glad we made the decision to switch to Nationwide. It's been really easy to submit claims and get them processed. We chose to add the Pet Wellness option, which is a nice feature. Nationwide has honored what they stated they would reimburse, and we've saved so much money. Nationwide has made it a lot easier for us to make sure our pet is well taken care of.
