Edit Feb 2024: Reduced to 1 star when my 14 month old puppy's insurance also increased by 40% with one $550 claim and he's been insured with Trupanion since he was 3½ months.

If I could give 3.5 stars, I would.
Trupanion has been fantastic about covering unexpected veterinary bills. Probably $8-10k for one of our doggos who is still able-bodied partly due to our pet insurance policy. Unfortunately, our premiums went up about 30% since we began coverage in 2019. I'm led to believe this is due to some complex equation that considers the costs of veterinary expenses for cohorts in my area. Trupanion is clear that submitting claims will not cause rate increases.... I'm struggling to believe that but everything seems to be outrageously expensive since 2020 so what can I really say. It's just a bit disappointing. Having said all of that, I'm not aware of a better pet insurance company.
UPDATE: Trupanion shares dropped 35% yesterday after the company revealed that it “expects to report two material weaknesses in internal controls." See "Business Wire" for the story. Class action lawsuit is a possibility.
Backlogged with appeals! Currently working on appeals from over a month ago! If they are working around the clock on appeals, you have to worry about the legitimacy of this company.
I signed up with Trupanion Pet Insurance almost 2 months ago. I am a Paramedic who is currently off work with PTSD. I have a little pug that helps me with my anxiety.
My dog had emergency surgery for an acute bladder obstruction on the day my policy came into effect. The claim was denied on the basis of it being pre-existing. The day at the Vet cost me approx. $5500. Had I not had the credit, my dog would be dead. The evening of my dog's surgery, they took the insurance premium out of my account....
When I called Trupanion, I spoke to a low level representative who said that Trupanion didn't even have any of my dog's vet records. When I asked if a human being even looked at the claim, she said no. When I asked if a "computer" denied it, she said yes. If there is any anomaly such as a date, that the computer system does not like, instead of having a human call to clarify, you will be outright denied. I have since sent over an appeal. My vet is also filing the claim again. It has been over 3 weeks and the appeal has yet to be assigned to anyone. When my wife called Trupanion today, the manager suggested they are back-logged with appeals and are currently addressing appeals filed on Jan 11. Wow. Is there a possible scam going on at this company? When my wife asked if the process would take another month or so, the representative said "probably."
Trupanion has been reported on by CTV NEWS in the past for denying claims based on "pre-existing" conditions.
In my case, a human being has apparently not even looked at my claim. Whether or not my claim is deniable or not, I don't know. The way we have been treated is horrible, that is for sure. I have reported this to CBC News Marketplace.
RESPONSE TO TRUPANION'S REPLY: Your "copy and paste" response did not, in any way, address any of the concerns I posted here. As you rest your head on your pillow tonight, I want you to think of all those backlogged appeals. The animals that are dying. The animals that are suffering. The people that are suffering, crying, foregoing food so they can save their pet. Now think of your CEO Darryl and your shareholders lining their pockets. Think of that as you try to sleep tonight.
Trupanion is the best insurance for your fur babies, they are so worth it, I have 3 dogs, and I never have to worry about their health care. It's better than my own health Insurance company.

-Will try to blame everything on pre-existing conditions like allergies other injuries etc
-Extremely frequent rate increases - twice a year?
-They are cheap when you first sign up and then they raise the price dramatically over the years, which limits your ability to get a more cost-effective pet insurance option as your pet has aged by the time you realize trupanion jacks up their prices dramatically
I've been with Trupanion a year but I'm cancelling my policy. My premium has increased by over 40.00 dollars a month. I was paying 160.00 and it's now going to be over 200.00 It's not worth it to me as they find every reason to cite pre existing conditions to deny coverage. Apparently asking the vet what foods should be used to avoid hairballs qualify as a pre existing condition. So Trupanion doesn't cover my cat if she has any gastrointestinal issues 🙄 My advice, don't go with Trupanion. They are highly expensive and you get little bang for your hard earned dollars.

Deductible
You can choose your deductible from $0 – $1000, in $5 increments, to fit your budget.
Trupanion offers a lifetime, per condition deductible meaning that once the deductible is met for an eligible condition, you never have to meet it again. That condition is covered for life. This is great for chronic conditions that can span the entirety of a pet’s life such as allergies or cancer.
Age Limits
All pets under 14 years old can enroll.
Once enrolled, pets stay insured regardless of age.
Waiting Period
Accidents: 5 days
Illnesses: 30 days
Other providers may have additional waiting periods for congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, Trupanion does not.
Exclusions
Trupanion was developed to protect you and your pet from unexpected illnesses and injuries. That means we don’t cover “predictable” care costs that you can plan ahead for, like:
Examination fees
Wellness and preventive care
Elective, or cosmetic procedures
Sales tax, where applicable
