I would be in a world of hurt without Healthy Paws. I have a 5 year old German Shepherd that is a certified human remains detection dog and active search and rescue K9 in Texas. She was unlucky and developed colonic torsion, only the 2nd case our emergency vet had seen in his 30 years of practice. Starbuck (my GSD) was not feeling well for a few days and despite efforts by my local vet (and $600), she was not recovering. After 2 days, my local vet recommended I take her to a specialty/emergency vet in the city.
The specialty vet looked at Starbuck and recommended exploratory surgery as the Xrays were not clearly showing what the problem was, but the surgery would cost between $5500-6000! They said we could wait another day and see if there was improvement or change, but that there would be added risk of things getting worse. Starbuck is like my kid and we have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours training for search and rescue together. I was definitely going to go through with the surgery, but knowing that I would be covered by Healthy Paws, I didn't even have to consider waiting or how I was going to afford the bill (I'm a graduate student, so money is always tight).
Today, Starbuck is healing up well and should be able to start search practice again in a week or so! Healthy Paws has reviewed all of the claims and has sent out checks! I recieved about 90% of the expenses back turning a $6500 nightmare into a much more manageable $700 exercise in belt tightening!

Signing up our dog with Healthy Paws was the smartest thing we ever did!
Could not be happier with Healthy Paws. Besides being able to pick out the amount of insurance, cost, deductions, etc, you get exactly what you sign up for! No surprises! Only surprise is how quick and easy it is to put in a claim and get a satisfied result!! Our dog as many allergies and form the start of testing and blood work and meds, Healthy Paws has been with us all the way and continues to do so. I told a friend who just got a new puppy about Healthy Paws and after she did her own research, signed up as well and is extremely happy too!

My puppy's savior
My 5-month-old GSD puppy had a critically serious viral pneumonia, because of which my puppy almost died. My boy had to rely on the ventilator for nearly two weeks to survive, which cost over ten thousand dollars per day and I had to pay for the treatment daily. The policy of healthy paws insurance is the greatest, as, in my case, they were able to make the direct payment to the veterinary everyday so that I only had to pay the balance after the coverage. There were still a couple thousands to pay daily, but what healthy paws did truly meant a lot. Healthy paws helped me out of there and literally saved my GSD puppy. I'm sincerely grateful to healthy paws for the timely help!!

Healthy Paws saved my dog's life, and my bank account.
Many people tried to talk me out of pet insurance when I adopted my dog. I was told it was a scam, that they didn't cover anything, and that as my dog aged, the premium would skyrocket. However, a few good friends told me about Healthy Paws and said they had wonderful experiences with them. After doing my research (including a rather lengthy call grilling a Healthy Paws rep on what they do/do not cover) I took the leap. I figured paying $45/mo would be like a savings plan for that inevitable day I needed a 5k procedure. I hoped that day would be many years off. Jump forward to the one year anniversary of adopting my 8 year old dog. He's rushed to the vet, who sends us to an ER, who sends us to a specialist vet hospital. $$$$$. I was panicking. I thought there was no way Healthy Paws would cover a $7500 vet bill when I had only had coverage for 10 months. I was sure there would be some loophole they'd find. Nope! After my $500 deductible, Healthy Paws covered 80% of the bills. (That's the plan I chose, you can choose your own deductible and percentage of coverage.) At the specialists hospital, whenever they would suggest another diagnostic test, I would call Healthy Paws and say, "but do you cover this???" After my third call, the kindest woman said, "You are covered for anything and everything related to this illness. We just want Louie (my dog) to get better. You don't need to call us for every little test." Sure enough, I submitted the bills and the medical records, and had a check in my hands 8 days later. Incredible, right? So jump forward another four months, and my dog is listless, vomiting, and has intense potty issues. I rush him to the ER thinking, "there's no way they're going to cover another emergency four months after the first one!" $4500 later, I was proven wrong. I had a direct deposit 5 days after submitting my bills and a lovely email from someone saying, "it seems like Louie's had a rough go lately. We're glad to be a part of his recovery." WHAT? Amazing.
Recently my Healthy Paws anniversary rolled around and I received the email with my updated premiums. I thought, "here we go. Louie's rate is going to sky rocket, or they're kicking us out." Mind you, Louie is now 9 years old, a mess of a dog, and has cost this company about 10k at this point. My increase was $3 a month. THREE DOLLARS. That's it!
I'd also like to point out that the New York Times recently did a story on how pet insurance is a scam, but specifically called out Healthy Paws (and Trupanion) for being on the up and up!
I'm not a person of means, but I like to adopt the underdog dog (redundant?) With Healthy Paws, I can! Give them a try. You won't be disappointed.
