How to Save Money at VCA Canada Birchmount Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.
How Do You Choose the Right Pet Insurance Provider?

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very happy I made the choice to bring my senior kitty here for 2 weeks boarding while I was on vacation. She has kidney disease and I didn't want her to be alone at this age. The clinic took very good care of my kitty and called about updates regularly. Even helped me with her nail trim for which she no longer has patience. BUT don't make the mistake I did: even though I booked the $40/day stay, I didn't confirm that when I dropped her off and got charged a week of $55/day. My mistake I guess since this was my first time doing boarding... I'll remember to confirm next time and so should you if you're on a budget too!

I have nothing but good things to say about everyone at VCA Birchmount animal hospital. Brought our 5 year old pug in for what appeared to be a bladder infection, turned out to be really huge bladder stones. Dr Tse was amazing, went over everything in detail taking the time to make sure I fully understood what was happening and why. She even took it upon herself to help reduce costs as much as she could, which considering how expensive surgeries can be and in a time where the cost for everything is on the rise was really generous of her. I would have never expected to be treated this well. After her surgery the team again took the time to fully explain in detail everything about the recovery process as well as her medications and dietary needs. The front desk staff are always happy, polite and make you feel at home and that they genuinely care about your pet. Simply love you guys, you have a customer for life.

Dr Crystal was absolutely amazing! My pretty girl is an inbred shelter dog and tends to get really excited when meeting new people, which caused me issues with her previous vet (he didnt even examine her and just gave me a diagnosis from afar lol). Soleil was surprisingly very calm and happy when Dr Crystal was checking on her! She handled her perfectly and was very kind and gentle. I could tell my dog trusted her. She was also very informative with her findings when examining my dog. It took me a while to find a good clinic and vet and I will surely have her as my primary vet from now on!

If only we can give doctor Barret a Grammy, Oscar, and Emmy in terms of being absolutely the most caring, amazing, and loving vet to our Blueberry, we would nominate him a million times over. Dr. Barret has gone above and beyond for our lil Blue and she absolutely adores him. She has seen over 6 vets (most of them being eye problems) and Dr. Barret is the only vet she doesn't tremble/shake around. If we can keep going on about him, we would, Blue loves him and so do we. Dr. Barret went into this loving animals and wanting to solve their problems and you can tell. Pictures are before and after pics of Blue’s eyes. Cherry eyes are not common in corgis, but at-least we found a vet that understood that and did their research.

We have been going to Birchmount for care for our Emma for 7 years. Sadly, the hospital has changed from what it used to be. Once it was the little red house on Birchmount, with dedicated staff that always made you feel like they cared about your pet. Ever since they were bought out by an American company, Mars Bar, they have lost site of what they used to be. Now when you call, no one ever answers the phone, no one returns calls to clients and when you walk in the clinic you just feel like money not family. Prices are ridiculously high, the staff turnover is insane, that's saying something about how HR is running this hospital. Some people here I truly love and they'll be missed, but we have changed clinics as we just feel like numbers!! Need a great groomer DM on instagram @grooming_by-Jacquie, self employed home studio, one on one attention for each little furry canine cutie!!
