How to Save Money at Amherst Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.
How Do You Choose the Right Pet Insurance Provider?
Pet Insurance Review makes it incredibly easy for pet parents to select an insurance provider they feel good about. You can use our handy comparison tool to get the gist of what a company offers. Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
Went here for a last minute vaccination for my rabbit before I take him on a trip. Was nervous seeing some reviews specifically about bunnies and negative experiences here. My experience was great the dr was great the assistant was great. They were very gentle with my rabbit and he is at home now resting.

Brought my bunny Bruce here when he was going through GI stasis. Dr. Monica was transparent with optional procedures we could take, as well as costs but we didn’t feel pressured like we have at other rabbit vets and said that the medication would stay the same either way. She answered all of my questions & was very reassuring at a time of high stress. Spent $200 for the exam & medications and after a few days my baby was completely healthy! The receptionists and assistant were also very warm and friendly. 100% recommend for all bun parents!

I took my beagle here in October in an emergency situation--she had been stung by a bee and was having a severe allergic reaction. It was a Sunday and my regular vet was closed, so I went to the nearest vet with availability so that my dog could get an antihistamine shot ASAP. I am so disappointed with the service I received and the staff's slow, unconcerned approach to getting my dog treatment. It took 30 minutes past the appointment time to be seen, and when we finally got into the exam room, the vet took her sweet time doing needless bullshit when the dog was in very bad shape and clearly needed immediate intervention. My dog was lying on her side, barely able to move, breathing very shallowly, had white gums, and threw up TWICE in the consultation room, on top of the vomiting she had been doing at home and in the car. She was very clearly in shock and needed immediate care. Instead of responding to what was obviously a textbook allergic reaction to a bee sting that we had observed directly (we saw it happen and saw the dog immediately go into shock), the vet took a good five minutes to greet the dog and "get to know her," offer her treats (wtf, she's barely conscious at this point), and ask us a bunch of idiotic questions about about whether the dog had eaten something. She talked to us in such a condescending tone, like we had no idea what was going on. She just did not believe that the dog was in anaphylaxis and wanted to question us about possible causes and run bloodwork (!!) before offering treatment. By this point my dog looked so weak and ill that I was quite scared and insisted that the vet treat her for anaphylactic shock right away. The doctor hemmed and hawed and stalled, at which point I became frustrated and told her I used to work at a vet clinic and understood what the dog needed in this situation. Even after the vet finally agreed to treat for anaphylaxis, she disappeared for a good 15 mins to "get the meds ready." During this time my dog was visibly deteriorating--it had been an hour and a half since the sting happened and she still hadn't been treated. I finally left the exam room to look for the doctor because my dog was looking so rough by then, barely conscious, and heard the vet having a casual conversation with someone in the back, laughing and shooting the shit. I had to get the front desk to call her into the exam room, at which point my dog (finally) received the shots she needed to stop the reaction. Surprise surprose, the dog improved pretty much immediately. I have owned dogs for 20 years and had many past veterinary visits, and I couldn't believe the lack of urgency with which this very obvious emergency was handled. The vet kept baby talking us and the dog like nothing had happened, giving us needless instructions, pushing needless prescriptions on us (of what use is gabapentin in this situation? ????), and urging us to "come see her again." Even if I didn't have a regular vet I trusted, I would never come back to this veterinary hospital. Absolutely unprofessional and medically irresponsible behaviour on the part of the vet and the staff, who don't seem capable of triaging genuinely time-sensitive situations. Save yourself a headache and don't bring your animals here. These people are incompetent and unbothered.

I had a disappointing experience at Amherst veterinary Hospital. I was referred here from another vet Clinic as Amherst had availability. It felt like their primary focus was on making money rather than genuinely caring for my cat’s well-being. They pushed for several unnecessary tests and treatments, making it clear that they were more interested in upselling certain services than addressing my cat's actual issues. They were unhelpful with anything to do with a payment plan which I was mislead to believe they had one by the clinic that had referred me (a sister clinic) if the bill was too expensive up front. I left feeling frustrated and concerned that my cat’s needs were secondary to their financial gain although they made me decide what I felt was most important for her to be treated with what I could afford? especially with them now understanding I had limited financial resources . I was lucky I had a few of the things already from prior vet appointments with my other animals . I won’t be returning
