How to Save Money at Rouge Valley Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our goodest boi Jack had to get some teeth and a huge lump on his back removed. The lovely people at Rouge Valley Veterinary Hospital took great care of him from intake to recovery 😊. We also got to meet Heidi the resident office cat! She is the sweetest!

I can't say enough about the staff and Vets. Absolutely top notch. I take both my cat and dog to them. Their prices I find to be very reasonable. If your looking for a Veterinarian I highly recommend them. Vimy and Smudge both say thank you.

Dr. Nev and her staff are caring animal lovers. Staff is pleasant on the phone when booking appointments or to ask questions they are always willing to help if they can. Dr. Nev has cared for my 2 cats compassionately and carefully. She has an excellent "table-side" manner and you can tell she cares about your pet and his or her best interests. She lays out the options available, some of which can be excessively expensive and she doesn't make clients feel like bad animal owners if they don't get an echocardiogram (in my case for a 14-year-old dog) who's had a heart murmur all of his life and has been a happy guy all his years. With our cats, she helped us with fighting by introducing us to pheromones which have made a huge difference. The most expensive options are not pushed. She is super friendly and kind and I would recommend this clinic to anyone.

This place is highly inconsiderate. I got my male cat neutered and the vet said that he doesn’t need to change his litter box, and would not require a cone and it’s “optional” and should be good within 24 hours. (Which was weird because based on my research, they require 10-14 days) Few days later, my cat who is very vocal, kept hiding in his litter box and was not happy. I called in to book a complimentary checkup post surgery as my cat was clearly in pain. They prescribed him pain meds and said that his incision is swollen and I should’ve made him wear a cone 24/7 (when clearly after surgery the doc said it’s optional and he should be fine the next day) and they charged me again for an antibiotic injection and a cone which they told me I had to purchase. The vet on the follow-up appointment said you should’ve changed the litter box post surgery too WHEN clearly the day of his neuter they said he doesn’t have to. They also charged me a late no show fee when I had called in to reschedule my appointment. The lady at the reception was extremely rude and said that we can’t waive the fee as it’s your second time (when I asked her how, she mentioned for the prior day which I called in about as I had a family emergency and she said we received no calls (I have the call proof) and seemed like she didn’t care at all) the no show fee is $60 btw. This place lacks transparency with pet parents , kindness and is just a money making machine. This vet clinic is nothing more than a cash grab, caring more about making money than our pets' well-being. DON’T GO HERE.
