How to Save Money at Vaughan - Richmond Hill Veterinary Emergency Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our cat had trouble using the litter box past midnight and needed to be taken to an emergency clinic. He was seen very quickly by Dr. Ann who provided detailed explanation of his situation and gave a detailed breakdown of the different options and prices so we could make an informed decision. The staff at the clinic were also very friendly and helpful. They also called us to follow up the next day to see how our cat was doing. Following the call, Dr. Diane gave some further advice on how we could help our cat with an additional prescription, and contacted our usual vet to see if we could pick it up from them instead (as they were closer to us). Our cat is doing much better now thanks to the entire team’s support! We received the help and care just when we needed it the most and prices were reasonable. Highly recommended!

Absolutely amazing staff! They took my dog Ghost in right away with GDV and we're so attentive and compassionate. Shes still on the mend but started recovering after a long downturn thanks to the incredible care she received here. Keep saving lives!

This review from Anna A, I am incredibly grateful to the amazing team at Vaughan Richmond Hill Veterinary Clinic for their exceptional care and support. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond to ensure my cat Bella received the best treatment. A special thank you to Amanda for recognizing Bella's anxiety and recommending medication to help calm her down. We were at the clinic for 8 hours, starting with Dr. Ash Hopkins, who took the time to examine Bella with such kindness and consideration. When the shift changed, Dr. Diana Ho took over, thoroughly explaining the tests that had been conducted and making sure we understood the next steps. She also made sure Bella’s medication was ready for us to take home. Despite her initial reluctance to eat, Bella's condition wasn't improving, so I returned on Christmas Eve. Dr. Ash Hopkins and Dr. Leslie Burks were both on duty, and I am so thankful for their patience. They sat with Bella at her level, gently working with her until she began to calm down. Dr. Burks’ ointment made a significant difference, and Bella was soon eating again. Thank you, doctors and staff, for your compassionate care and dedication to Bella’s well-being. Your efforts are truly appreciated! Thanks again Anna A

From the exceptional and timely care of an urgent medical situation with our cat, to the compassion they showed to him, me and my family, to the regular follow up calls and scheduled visits, right down to the update pictures they sent, they made a difficult and scary situation manageable. This was not the first time they were there for us and our fur babies and we are so very grateful to the entire team - again! ❤️

I can't say enough good things about this emergency clinic. I wish they had higher reviews, because they truly deserve it! We rushed our poor boy here in the middle of the night and he was taken in immediately. There were other pet owners there as well, all of whom were being tended to... so rest assured they're doing their best to help everyone. The doctor treating him (I'm sorry I don't remember their name but I think the day doctor treating him was Dr. Ho) quickly found out what was going on and went over his treatment plan. It was hard to absorb given the stressful situation, but his doctor responded with compassion and understanding the entire time explaining each treatment on the list so we knew what was going on. We got numerous follow-up calls within his 24-hour stay to give updates on how he was doing and how they were going to proceed which helped ease our stress. We were also told the doctor was by his side the entire night, due to his terrible state. Everyone working here clearly loves animals. Safe to say you can trust them with your little ones, just as we do. He's doing much better now thanks to all of you. Thank you for being the superheroes that you are! We really do appreciate it and I'm sure Gunther does too :)
